I'm not here to boast . dd has achieved lower level 4 in maths and english and middle 4 in science.
Obviously i dont know how representative this is apart from level 4 should be attained by all yr 6 children.

I am disappointed, not because she's never gonna set the world alight with her brains (takes after me I'm afraid ) but its the banding in high school that concerns me. I was in set 2 for everything and was a pretty average kid.
Last year the top five bands at her school were the children who got middle 4 and above, the followed by two middle bands for those children below that, and the special needs class.
However the year before the cut off was lower 4 so I dont know where she will be yet but just have horrible memories of the kids that were in the lower sets in my school and dont want dd to be in a class of kids who mess about and have little interest in learning.

I'm sorry if this post has come out all the wrong way, maybe her classes will be very good I dont know. Just wondered what the norm was for Yr 6 children and how the banding works at other schools

TIA

The secondary school I have worked at have pretty much ignored SATS results. They use CAT tests at the begining of year 7 for setting.

ours do not set apart from maths (using their own tests) but each child given individual targets two sublevels up each year from their year 6 sats then readjusted each half year

my son got 4's , one 3 and a 5 in science. We are very proud because he has severe dyslexia and has work very hard. Reallytired is right though, once in secondry school they may move them about after CAT tests.

yes we have been told that they will do tests in November and then be re-banded in December so thats what we are working towards now.

Have promised dd a rabbit

Son got 5 maths, 5a science and 5b reading and 4c writing (overall 4a english, missed 5 by 1%) He is doing CATS tests tomorrow, so won't know where he will be banded yet.

I am not sure you can do a lot to prepare for CATS test. Unless you want to get some verbal and non verbal reasoning books.

Personally I think enjoying the summer is good prepation.

DD got all 3's. In the past I have asked if she could be dyslexic. No. Had her tested for ADD. No. Basically noone seems to know what her problem is, but I feel vindicated by these SATs results, cos surely they'll have to sit up and take notice now! She does get a bit of extra help with literacy and numeracy. I'm hoping that secondary school will sort things out when she gets there.

Not sure about all secondary schools but we don't set until the first half term, when we have tested the kids ourselves. We find that these test often give us a clearer idea of the child's baseline ability.

We also set in different sunjects independently, so a child could be in 'top' set for english and 'bottom' set for maths, if that is best for them IYSWIM. You may well not know the final sets until half term

portonovo · 17/07/2007 19:51

Our secondary school also largely ignores SATs results. They use CATs and Edinburgh Reading Tests and the teachers' assessments over the first 1-2 terms to set children. Sets are fairly fluid, they are reviewed termly and children can and do move both up and down. Sets are also different for each subject like the previous poster said - one subject might have 2 parallel top sets, one middle and one lower, while another subject ends up with sets 1-5. It varies from year to year depending on the abilities within that particular grouping.

Hopefully your daughter will be in the 'right' sets for her, allowing her to work and progress at the right pace.

Have spoken to teacher this week. Son did CATs test on Friday, but new school has rung up and asked for the SATS results, not just the levels to be faxed to them this week. They have also spoken to teacher about each child.

DD was totally uninterested in SATS - said it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. Can't imagine where that came from..... She got 5s for everything - as did 70% of her class. At her grammar school they'll be ignored and setting for maths will start at Christmas.
