Hi there,

My DD is age 9 (year 5) and at an independent prep school. Last week we had a parent's evening and I was told she was generally doing very well. I was told that she had a standardised score of 125 for English and 115 for Maths. There wasn't enough time for me to ask for any explanation of what this meant - does anybody have any idea? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a CAT score. If you google it you will find a parents guide to the scores. If you are looking at selective senior schools then a score above 115 is what you would expect to achieve to be in with a chance.

That will be PIP scores. Prep usually schools track pupils scores over 2-3 years (4-6). Our DD’s HT had records showing correlation between PIP scores and where pupils get offered secondary school places. This helps them advise on what schools would suit each DC. 120+ is very good, iirc 100 is average, but super selective secondaries may usually end up taking DC’s with130+ for example (there will of course be entrance exams but these scores are a guide to expectations and also will help HT argue a pupils case if they were to have an unexpectedly poor exam result).

100 is national average.
If a school is selective you wold expect their (school) average to be 115 ish.
125 is very good.
130+ exceptional

Thanks very much for this - I will look up PIP. She will hopefully board for secondary so not a super selective London secondary. Would these scores be ok for that do you think? Teacher said the maths was below what she would expect for her - are the scores determined from a single test that is done every year?

That should be fine for all but the most selective boarding school. It's usually based on a one off test so not unusual to under perform on the day.

Termly at DD’s school, if not half termly.
