Ideas for school centenary celebrations?

I was wondering if any of you brilliant mumsnetters were feeling inspired? It is our local primary school's centenary next year and we need to come up with lots of great ideas to mark the big occasion. Has anyone had any great experiences they could share? Fairs, commemorative items, events, etc?

We held an Edwardian day where staff and pupils and some PTA members dressed up as Edwardians. All lessons were Edwardian-style, including P.E. and assembly. Parents were invited to come in to observe lessons.

This was part of a 2-month sequence of celebrations, starting with an Edwardian-style Christmas concert (everyone dressed up then too, so costumes got used twice!).

The main hall was (still is) decorated with displays of how schools were then and have changed. Many of the displays were done in chalk on black sugar paper to look like old-fashioned writing boards.

The Edwardian day was part of the main week of events which started on the Sunday with an open day for past pupils, teachers and parents. The town museum put together a display on the school, and brought this along to the open day. We had appealed in the local press for old photos, videos, stories etc. Visitors were asked to sign a book and write some of their memories of the school. A few of us from the PTA put on a huge buffet for the open day - the school had charged a few pounds to attend.

On the Friday of that week there was a birthday assembly, with a brilliant cake in the shape of the school. The whole school was in the assembly, and we also invited the mayor, heads of other local schools, governors, the few parents who do most of the fundraising, and several other VIPS.

Everyone had drinks and a piece of the cake, and the children all got a commemorative medal.

We also put together a centenary newsletter which sold.

We did similar things to Portonovo (except it was a Victorian day - showing my age here lol). We put on a musical play set 100 years in the future as well with four of us playing ourselves 100 years older. We also made a centenary quilt and we buried a time capsule.

When our primary school was 100 we had similar to Portonovo - inc a pageant, music hall songs, maypole dancing, Victorian lessons with slates etc and lots of fancy dress.

When my senior school was 100 I think we mostly had mainstream-type events to raise money for the scholarship fund, but on the day itself each class took a decade of the century, dressed up, decorated its classroom appropriately (I still remember the psychdelic 1960s Upper Fifth form room) and I think might each have done a skit / song or something as well.
And there was a commemorative yearbook and merchandise and stuff, and a lot of Old Girls hanging about.

Lovely ideas! I had thought an Edwardian day or an Edwardian fair might be fun. Great idea to appeal in the local press.

I love the idea of a centenary quilt. We have some super-crafty PTA-ers (not me included) who might like to lead this.

The idea of going 100 years forward as well as back is great.

So glad I asked! Keep the ideas coming! We have a meeting about this tonight and I will look like the PTA-er who's done her homework!

our primary school had a big birthday last year, but nowhere near 100!!! They did a garden party and invited all the old students back and they had a massive birthday party for all the children...loads of outside people coming in to make stuff...was brilliant...the children all got a commemorative badge as well...also balloon launch at the beginning of the year...it basically went on all year with bits and pieces...was also a fab ball for parents
