We held an Edwardian day where staff and pupils and some PTA members dressed up as Edwardians. All lessons were Edwardian-style, including P.E. and assembly. Parents were invited to come in to observe lessons.
This was part of a 2-month sequence of celebrations, starting with an Edwardian-style Christmas concert (everyone dressed up then too, so costumes got used twice!).
The main hall was (still is) decorated with displays of how schools were then and have changed. Many of the displays were done in chalk on black sugar paper to look like old-fashioned writing boards.
The Edwardian day was part of the main week of events which started on the Sunday with an open day for past pupils, teachers and parents. The town museum put together a display on the school, and brought this along to the open day. We had appealed in the local press for old photos, videos, stories etc. Visitors were asked to sign a book and write some of their memories of the school. A few of us from the PTA put on a huge buffet for the open day - the school had charged a few pounds to attend.
On the Friday of that week there was a birthday assembly, with a brilliant cake in the shape of the school. The whole school was in the assembly, and we also invited the mayor, heads of other local schools, governors, the few parents who do most of the fundraising, and several other VIPS.
Everyone had drinks and a piece of the cake, and the children all got a commemorative medal.
We also put together a centenary newsletter which sold.
