I'm starting it tonight and I have to decided between Personal Tax or Audit for my 1st optional unit.

I was swaying towards Audit as I thought it would be more relevant in the work place but now I'm thinking as an accountant I may need to know personal tax issues as well.

Has anyone sat this course that can help me decide??

TIA

To be honest I'd think it depends which you find more interesting. Personal tax will be useful (think of helping friends with their returns ) but I'd guess that if you are hoping to work with a chartered accountants practice then Audit would be seen as more relevant.

Are you already working in accounts or hoping to move into it when you finish the course? If already working, how about asking your employers opinion?

I'm about to start AAT (just to get me back into practise, I actually did a Business Studies with Finance degree 20 years ago), and think I'm going for the 1 year fast-track course, although wonder too about doing one day per week for two years, and working part time too (got to decide before tomorrow)

I have done AAT foundation and Intermediate - have not been brave enough to attempt Technician yet. My DH is a Chartered Accountant with his own business - I will ask him tonight which option he would recommend. Just rang my husbands employees who have just done Technician before they joined his practice and they have said to go for Personal Tax!

Depends whether you want the easy route or not, I chose Audit as it was more relevant to work, being in local government. Based on what those on my course told me about the tax option, Audit was by far the easiest and least time consuming (less homework - infact virtually none at my college).

Hi Sweetheart

I'm qualified MAAT and FCCA - I'd recommend personal tax because there is a correct answer. I always found Auditing so boring - personal choice. I ended up working in personal tax for about 8 years and yes you can earn a lot of money helping people with their tax returns if you understand the tax system. Good luck
