scholarship assessment - dress code??

Hi all, before I get flamed, no, this is not the most important thing to be considering for a Scholarship assessment day, I know. BUT, are jeans ok? DS lives in jeans and a fleece on weekends... his wardrobe is very limited... Any experience of what primary kids wear to these? He will be going into to year 3. It's a fairly remote outdoorsy country school for boarders and non boarders for context. So not a flashy London prep. Any advice appreciated.

What sort of scholarship? If not sports then smart casual is usually acceptable, so not scruffy/torn jeans.

LIZS · 31/01/2019 11:11

Or school uniform.

whatisheupto · 31/01/2019 11:14

Thanks Lizs. It's academic scholarship.

I'd buy him a nice smart / casual outfit for the day, something he really likes . I know it's not the most important thing, but it will make him feel good and increase his confidence.

whatisheupto · 31/01/2019 12:05

Thanks. I will buy him a new outfit i think! Smart casual it is! Thanks for help.

Good luck to your DS !

Dd went in school uniform ( she got the scholarship)
Good luck to your son

kenandbarbie · 31/01/2019 18:17

I would have thought school uniform.

MimiDul · 31/01/2019 18:45

It really does depend on the school and the day. My DS sat for Dulwich College. All the boys who sit the 7+ are automatically considered for a scholarship there. They had their interviews last Saturday and the letter asked that the boys be casually dressed. Some of the boys turned up in their football kit. I think it should be whatever the child is comfortable in so that he has one less thing to worry about. Good luck to your DS!

Michaelahpurple · 31/01/2019 19:32

Unless they specifically ask for games kit I’d be inclined to send him in uniform. It is what he usually wears to do school work so will prime him, he will be totally used to it so comfy and it eliminates any “am I too smart/ am I too casual/ his clothes are fancier “ etc issues because he doesn’t get to choose his uniform - no personal projection.

Michaelahpurple · 31/01/2019 19:34

But make sure his least ragged set is available! I am so used to. It paying a huge amount of attention day to day that I nearly sent my child in for a music scholarship in his really holey old jumper. Not that I think either him or the school in question would have minded if I had, in this case.

Ring and ask the registrar if they want them in school uniform or mufti

Lara53 · 01/02/2019 14:06

School uniform here. Telephone the school and ask! One child showed up in track bottoms and fleece at DS’s interview day and the others were all in uniform which had been asked for on the invite letter!

t1mum3 · 01/02/2019 15:40

Uniform is OK, but on a Saturday I would send him in dark jeans, cords or chinos, a checked shirt and possibly a V neck jumper. I remember having the mickey taken out of me for wearing my school uniform to a scholarship interview for a posh country school on a non school day. Good luck to him.

Somethingsmellsnice · 01/02/2019 16:10

Chinos and a polo shirt with hoody was the standard for my boys. Only school uniform if they request it. Otherwise they will be remembered by the other kids as the one who turned up in uniform when they didn't need to.

Northernsights · 01/02/2019 17:09

Ds has one tomorrow (academic). He's wearing dark jeans and a jumper with trainers. He already goes to a similar school to the one you describe. I think anything clean would be absolutely fine at his prep!

CatkinToadflax · 04/02/2019 12:19

DS has just finished the scholarship process at his school and we're awaiting the results. He already attends the school. His scholarship process took place on 3 different days - two school days and a Saturday. All pupils (this included external entrants) were asked to wear school uniform on the school days but casual on the Saturday. DS rolled in in his favourite football kit and some of the others were similarly dressed. There were a few kids there who are currently home schooled, and they were smart on the school days (chinos, shirt etc) and casual on the Saturday. But yes - definitely ask the school so that you know you're getting it right. Good luck to your DS!

Oooh good luck to everyone! I did clarify with the school in the end and it's whatever he feels comfortable in..... including uniform if he wants! Anyway, going smart casual! Thanks all for taking me seriously!! I can reassure you we are paying as much attention to the music practice!!
