How often does your dc teacher change over home reading books in year1?

Not sure about year 1 sorry but my DS is in Reception and they're really good with books he takes home although some he brings back are very outdated. One was dated 1988 and had a scary picture of someone with an industrial sized tank of weed killer getting ready to eradicate a few caterpillars and greenfly from a normal sized back garden!! Being wildlife friendly I was not amused at that and suggested they remove it!

BooseysMom · 24/01/2019 19:25

Sorry forgot to say they sometimes forget to check his reading journal and don't give him a new book but I just write a note asking for a new one. The turn-over is on average a book every week although sometimes he brings back the same book. I have a feeling they're short of good ones

Haha...they lay concrete in of those books....why children were expected to learn to read "concrete" as o e of their first words I've no idea. Grin

I think books are usually changed every 3- 5 days in most schools. Unless children for some reason don't say they have it and it just sits in their bag. Hmm

CatsForLife · 24/01/2019 19:28

They usually check them three times a week for us, and replace if we’ve read th.

StitchesInTime · 24/01/2019 19:33

In my DC’s school, they send home 3 reading books at a time, and ask that they’re sent in to be changed at least once a week.

The bit where the system can fall down though, is once the kids are in Year 1 they encourage the kids to change the books themselves.
So if a child isn’t paying attention when the teacher asks if anyone needs to change their reading books, the books don’t get changed.

There’s been far too many occasions when I’ve had to stick a note in the bag asking the teacher to remind DS1 to change his reading books as he’s forgotten to do it himself all week.

scissy · 24/01/2019 19:34

Books get changed twice a week here, but they get 2 books at a time. If they haven't finished one/either of them they get to keep it until next time.

rubixqueube · 24/01/2019 20:44

Thanks for the replies. Oh yes that’s a whole different story, yesterday we had a book describing the usefulness of a fax machine. Both useless and super boring !

I asked that dd has 3 books a week instead of 2 and they’ve just given her the usual 2 then one horrendously ‘ancient book’ clearly aimed at that genre (had another book describing the use of a telephone directory book) and wondered if I’ve had too high expectations.

Sorry meant having old fashioned books while different story!

We used to get four books a week in Y1 (proper books not ridiculous books about fax machines). I would just go on the book people and buy a bundle of books yourself or go to the library.

They're not very exciting looking but you could get read, write inc reading books very cheap in black and white off amazon.

BooseysMom · 25/01/2019 10:46

**"yesterday we had a book describing the usefulness of a fax machine. Both useless and super boring !"

GrinThat's hilarious. Our school recently had a clear out of old books and there were some really outdated ones. But they've obviously kept a load too as DS often brings back ones from the 80s and 90s. Haven't seen any about fax machines or telephone directories yet. Only weed killer industrial style! Great to get kids interested in destroying wildlife from an early age!! Hmm

YerAWizardHarry · 25/01/2019 10:48

DS is primary two and gets 2 lots of 2 books a week. He also picks a library book once a week.

BareBelliedSneetch · 25/01/2019 10:52

Daily in Yr1. Every day or 2 in yr 2.

minipie · 25/01/2019 10:54

Confused the book is changed when the child has finished reading it, surely?

That’s how it works with ours anyway. So most children would finish a book across 2-4 days (better readers are given harder/longer books so it evens out) so 2-4 books per week. Plus a library book per week.

LetItGoToRuin · 25/01/2019 12:28

Books were changed once per week, with two books being given. We just supplemented at home / from the local library, and made a note in the reading record of all books read.

rubixqueube · 26/01/2019 14:39

We had this book a few months ago...

@minipie lots of children in my sons class still on very basic "level" books which would be read through in one sitting with a parent very much supporting

HaveNoSocks · 26/01/2019 18:41

To be fair I think it's fairly common for schools not to have great books. You should use the library or order big packs from book people. You can get huge collections for around £20. My DD likes Dirty Bertie and Holly Webb books. The collections work out at about £1 a book and are simple chapter books so last a at least a few days each.

BooseysMom · 26/01/2019 20:30

rubixqueube.. that book is hilarious! Grin
Obv essential stuff for today's kids!

Yes agree Book People are great and the library is always a good place to try. I picked out 12 books for DH and he loves them all

confusednorthner · 26/01/2019 20:39

Are you able to change them yourself? We let parents change them and we change for those in breakfast club etc. To be honest it's a big chunk of time changing books that we could do other things with and we are always happy for them to read home books too.

Ilovewillow · 02/02/2019 09:16

At our infant school the children are allowed to change their own books - they are shelved according to book bands and they change them when they want - my son usually changes his every day as we read the book each evening. Less as they move up the bands and they are larger books!

BooseysMom · 02/02/2019 20:25

@Ilovewillow...thanks. May I ask what year your son is in? I think mine is allowed to choose his too and he's in Reception

Ilovewillow · 02/02/2019 20:30

Booseysmum - of course he is yr 1 but this was also the case in yr R as soon as they had been assessed around October half term!

PhilomenaButterfly · 02/02/2019 20:34

It depends what books they're on. DD was off the reading scheme and on to Roald Dahl and Michael Morpurgo that year. So, when she finished it. DS2, once a week.

greenpop21 · 02/02/2019 20:34

I'm a TA in year 1 and change the reading books when they are read. Some chn read and finish their book every night, some have the same book for a few weeks because their parents don't read with them.
As for books being out of date, have a word with your MP. A new book scheme costs thousands and budgets have been slashed. School reading scheme books should only be part of the reading you do with your chid.
