Can someone explain 7+ and 11+ to me?

I left school early whereas lots of extended relatives went to private schools so I've no clue myself

Elderly relative might chip in (is making noises anyway that she'd like DS to go to various schools)

DS is bright but average, he probably could do far better but I don't push him very much as my personal philosophy was that he needed to enjoy it and focus on social skills first. He does learn quickly though and I suppose has shown he can cope with pressure in a competitive sport where he wins medals often

How do you find out about these exams, any scholarships and is it worth sitting 7+ even if your a parent like me who won't get extra tuition and just say if he passes he does, if he doesn't it's fine?

start with where you live and what independent (7+) or grammar (11+) schools are in the area and which ones you can realistically get to (unless you would move).
i would then go on the schools web sites and read the admission policies and the fee structure and potential bursary /scholarship options.
depending on how old your child is you need to see if you missed any deadlines (7+) or how what specific dates you need to keep in mind to apply to 11+.
once your armed with info (see if the family really is interested in contributing financially).
then you research the entrance requirements (most likely a test of some sort) and you decide if you wing it or if you prepare for it.
you will want to tour the places and maybe even chat to some parents who's children attend.
