Good primary schools within a 30-40 min travel to Shoredich

Hello, my cousin is moving to London with a 3 year old daughter. Her husband is going to travel to Shoredich to his office and they are looking for a nice area to live with excellent primary schools. Maybe someone could recommend a good school within this travel distance? Many thanks!

That's potentially a huge area; I'd doubt there would be anyone on here with intimate knowledge of all the primary schools within 40 mins' travel time from Shoreditch!

It's very hard to advise without knowing your cousin's preferences; do they want inner city or leafy suburbs, or somewhere in-between? In their position I'd start with the stations nearest to his work (perhaps Shoreditch High Street on the Overground, or one of the Central or District line stations) and work my way from there, as preferences and finances allow. Some people love Hackney (very close by); others would rather have more green space in Essex, for example, which is also easily reached from there. Or perhaps SE London (Honor Oak, Forest Hill or Sydenham along the Overground). Or there's NE areas llike Bounds Green or Tottenham or Walthamstow, reachable from Shoreditch via Highbury & Islington... There are very good schools all over London.

I'm sure if your cousin can narrow their search down, someone on Mumsnet will be able to give their views on primary options in a particular area.

They are after a good school in a leafy suburb. I could only think of Clapham/Blackheath area. But there is nothing in their budget (2k for a 2 bed) next to nice schools. I don’t think they can afford North London, so not sure what other areas they should consider.

South east london is much cheaper than Clapham still. They could try telegraph hill / brockley for schools like haberdashers temple grove / temple grove free school / Edmund waller / John stainer / myatt garden and then further into brockley etc around hilly fields all within their budget. Otherwise look at places with trains into Liverpool streeet which is a short walk from shoreditch

wtftodo · 09/01/2019 19:00

Also peckham? Peckham rye is lovely... schools I’m less sure on but lyndhurst, Belham etc are all popular. Pricier though

Thank you! Will have a look!

Could they afford Hackney? There are lots of good primaries and green spaces too. What about near London Fields, or up as far as Stoke Newington/ N!6 - that's an easy commute down to Shoreditch.

Notanotherpokemon · 10/01/2019 10:22

Thank you gloo, which schools could you recommend in Hackney?

Peckham/Camberwell - they're on the ginger line (Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill for Camberwell) so direct train to Shoreditch.

Sladurche · 10/01/2019 11:00

If they don't mind the commute, try moving out into Essex, with the commute into Liverpool Street. Chelmsford is nice with loads of primary schools rated highly on Ofsted and schoolguide.co.uk

I'm a bit out of touch with primaries as mine are older now, but for N16, Grasmere, Grazebrook, Jubilee, Betty Layward, William Patten all had good reps and are v.popular. Shacklewell's very popular now too - that's more Dalston. Then down nearer London Fields, Queensbridge is supposed to be lovely and Gayhurst is right on London Fields. I think London Fields Primary's good now too. You have to be really close to get into all of them though!

Notanotherpokemon · 10/01/2019 14:45

Thank you! This is very helpful.

Try Brockley

RiverTam · 10/01/2019 15:20

Brockley's a good shout, in fact if they're going to be here a while I'd try to get into the catchment of Haberdashers and then you've got an excellent secondary sorted as well, so look around New Cross (also on the ginger line).

wtftodo · 10/01/2019 16:30

New cross / telegraph hill plus some of brockley have both of the haberdashers primaries which both feed into the high school, and they are either side of the same station (new cross gate) on the orange line to shoreditch

Oriunda · 13/01/2019 20:04

Look at E11 or E18 postcodes - bounded by Epping Forest. Wanstead is more expensive than South Woodford and has more of a village atmosphere, but both have access to green spaces and lots of local shops and restaurants whilst being an easy commute on Central line to Stratford, Bethnal Green and Liverpool Street. Great schools too.

TheSheepofWallSt · 13/01/2019 20:08

Good Montessori schools in Wapping- I think also some decent state primaries. It’s not for everyone but personally love that bit of London.

imip · 13/01/2019 20:10

gloo is on the money with her list of schools. I work in one and my dc go to another and they are all decent schools with a strong community vibe.

Mrsfrumble · 13/01/2019 20:16

OP, can you clarify their budget? When you say “2k for 2 bed”, do you mean £2000 pcm rent?

gloo77 · 14/01/2019 11:39

imip Smile

MrsPatmore · 14/01/2019 19:32

If you mean a 2 bed for £2K per month then definitely achievable in Blackheath or Greenwich. Lovely, safe area, beautiful royal park, the river, bars, restaurants etc and v easy to central London. A lot of the primaries are very good but with fairly tight catchments. Off the top of my head, Halstow and Millenium primary schools in Greenwich and John Ball in Blackheath are great. Fairly easy travel to Shoreditch or could cycle if fearless!

ghislaine · 15/01/2019 16:55

You could try Herne Hill (SE24) or Denmark Hill (SE5) also - a range of good state and private primaries, and access to the Overground at Denmark Hill and trains to Victoria and King's Cross from Herne Hill.

Herne Hill:
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-68973940.html 2 beds at £1700pcm
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-69444925.html 2 beds at £1800.

Both these flats would see you into Dulwich Village Infants school as well as Judith Kerr. Maybe even Bessemer Grange. Also very close to Herne Hill pre-prep and JAGS pre-prep.

Denmark Hill:
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION%5E85451&minBedrooms=2&maxPrice=2000&includeLetAgreed=false&mustHave=garden Architecturally interesting! 2 beds at £1800 pcm
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION%5E85451&minBedrooms=2&maxPrice=2000&includeLetAgreed=false&mustHave=garden. 2 beds at £2000 pcm. No garden though it's a great little secret area.

From those properties you would get into Lyndhurst, Dog Kennel Hill and possibly also the Belham.
