Anyone have a zip-necked fleece as part of primary uniform?

I am researching whether these would be an option at DS1's junior school. Does anyone's school use them? (I know another primary in our town does). I actually think they look smart with the school logo on them. What do they cost? Any experience with them? Thanks

our PS has grey fleeces with the school logo
they cost £14 i think

they also have yellowy/gold sweatshirts with the logo which i have gone for

most of the boys wear the fleece and the girls seem to prefer the sweatshirt

miljee · 28/06/2007 11:15

Who makes them, please?

yes, we have them with the school logo on - think they are £15 (they are proper thick fleece, like a coat).

Also, a fantastic reversible coat - fleece on the inside, waterproof on the outside with the school logo (think that's around £18).

they're great, really warm, durable and good vfm.
If no one has answered later I'll have a look at label and let you know..

foxinsocks · 28/06/2007 11:23

have just checked the label and ours is made by School Trends

fwiw, I've found their stuff is good quality

miljee · 28/06/2007 11:23

Thanks! I may need to work on the school a bit. Currently they wear royal blue (Polyester) V neck jumpers or cardigans but I think a collared fleece looks smart and would be warmer around necks in winter. DS1 stuck one of our 1/4 zip fleeces on over his shirt and tie yesterday to go to the dentist post-school and it struck me how nice it looked. I wonder if we'd have the number to offer it as an additional extra rather than trying to change the established uniform?

And thanks to eveyone for brand names. I need to do my research in order to present the case to school. Incidentally, do I approach the head, the chair of governors or both simultaneously? I guess I can do a poll of parents as to who'd buy one to get numbers.

I would find out informally how many other parents agree with you and then take it to the head. If you go to the chair of govs at the same time the head may think you are trying to undermine him/her! Talk to the head, make your suggestions and hand over the facts and figures and the names of the other parents who agree with you. Our school has these fleece tops in a choice of colours with the school logo and you're right, they look nice. It may be worth offering to do the 'market research' for the head - such as typing a letter for getting feedback from all the parents.

miljee · 28/06/2007 11:46

Good advice. I'll do that, maybe see the head informally to see if he has strong views on it, then if he's willing I'm happy to type the letter necessary asking parents if they'd be interested. I know these things can suddenly go all political, and am also amused at the overheard conversations where parents rant at the coast of school uniform- all 20 quid the lot that it now costs!

Incidentally Ali, who makes yours?

I'm not sure - a local shop supplies them and I'm still on maternity leave (well, until tomorrow, boo hoo!) and can't remember. I'll peer at one of the labels tomorrow and leave a message.

miljee · 28/06/2007 14:56

Thanks! I want to do aprice comparison and any comments re quality always gratefully received.

Hi - just bought next years quota of sweatshirts etc for dd (planning ahead as nightmare to get sizes during summer break). Her uniform is royal/bright blue sweatshirts with school logo (£11 each) and an optional 3/4 zip fleece in same colour with logo (£16) both made by Jerzee (part of Russel Corp I think)and sold through local uniform shop. Both wash really well and the last lot have lasted her 2 years and are being replaced cos she has grown out of them rather than them being worn out.

islandofsodor · 28/06/2007 22:11

We have a reversable fleece made by Regatta. It is excellent quality and so far has lasted nearly 3 years and will be passed down from dd to ds.

It cost around £20.

KbearBrockovich · 28/06/2007 22:13

Black fleeces with logo by Jerzee - £12

Not many children wear them.

fortyplus · 28/06/2007 22:23

I used to run the uniform shop for my sons'school. School Trends are easily the best quality fleeces and sweatshirts.

I think we sold the zip fleece for £16 as far as I remember.

They also do an excellent reversible showerproof jacket.

Funnily enough, people didn't like their polo shirts - the poly/cotton ones made the children hot & sweaty and the cotton ones were too flimsy and went baggy & shrank. We changed to a company called Price & Buckland for those.

Ali5 · 29/06/2007 16:28

Had a look at the fleeces the label said 'snowgoose'. However, the shop that sells them have had problems with their supplier and therefore I wouldn't recommend them! They are in the process of finding a new supplier/manufacturer so I'm not much use I'm afraid!
