Most high schools in the area retain a sixth form; are you interested in school recommendations or just sixth form colleges? I don't think you'll get many responses on Mumsnet, I suggest joining the Cobham Mummies group on Facebook and asking there.

Cobmum · 30/12/2018 07:36

Schools with 6th forms or 6th form colleges - wevare open to all suggestions within a reasonable commute.

Cobham Free School is a good place to start looking as it's the most accessible from Cobham. I would ask for recommendations on a local FB group though because then you will hear from parents with kids at the schools.

Are you definitely moving to Cobham itself or just the general area? There are a lot of highly regarded schools round here. My DS1 is in year 11 and staying on at his high school for A levels. About half stay on at his school with only a handful each year coming from other schools. We looked at the local sixth form college but we thought the school environment was better for the staff really getting to know the students well.

@stuntnun I’m going to try to organise a look around Cobham Free School. We haven’t found a rental as yet as too early. but are looking at the Cobham area in general. Can I ask which school your DS is at please?

There are lots of little villages around Cobham that might be worth looking at too - have a good potter around the area.

titchy · 30/12/2018 11:40

What year is child now?

Cobmum · 30/12/2018 15:29

Yr11 @titchy but need to make applications ASAP as some schools seem to have Jan closing dates!!! Not sure if you can apply to a few and then decide later. I’m hoping so!

You can apply to as many as you want.

You need to decide what you/dc wants. Large college environment - Esher or Godalming colleges, very small school - Cobham Free (but an unknown quantity as only opens next September), Howard, Hinchley Wood.

Or private - there's loads - you might be too late for next year though.

StuntNun · 30/12/2018 19:58

Howard applications have already closed so it would probably have to be an in-year application.

OnGoldenPond · 31/12/2018 18:23

Deadline for applications for Esher College for September 2019 entry was last September/ October

titchy · 31/12/2018 18:30

Esher applications still open...

Bekabeech · 31/12/2018 18:37

Woking, Esther or maybe Godalming (a long commute). Schools the free school or Howard of Effingham (maybe the Guildford schools, applications may have closed but late ones may we'll be successful).

Then Private: St George's, Reeds (mixed in Sixth Form, RGS maybe if very bright. I did know a girl get into GHS applying later than this when her parents moved into the area but there were special reasons.
ACS if you want IB.
St John's?

OnGoldenPond · 01/01/2019 10:19

Esher website says main applications and places allocations closed in September but they have some places available on the reserve list which it appears they are accepting applications for. There is a link to their applications on the website.

OP, if I were you I would get straight onto the Esher website and get an application in for a place on the reserve list. Hopefully a confirmed place will come up in due course

@OnGoldenPond @titchy @bekabeech & @StuntNun thank you. Looking online the following schools look good but quite different. Do any of you have opinions or comparisons please -
Esher College; ‘Howard of Effingham’ ‘Cobham Free School’ and/or St Andrews Catholic school in Ashtead. Ideally thinking about 6th but any info/reputation etc would be great to know please. Huge thanks!

St Andrews has an excellent reputation, I have friends with kids there and they're very happy with it. Howard of Effingham also has a good reputation locally. I get the feeling they are coasting a bit but again it is a popular school. Both schools have a local bus route that picks up from the wider surrounding area - the Buses Excetera 479 (also serves Therfield School) - so if you live within walking distance of the bus route it's easy to get to school. It only runs at the start and end of the school day though, which can make it difficult to attend after school clubs, so a lot of children cycle to school. I don't know about the other two schools I'm afraid.

Bekabeech · 02/01/2019 09:23

Howard of Effingham is a very nice school - if you are at all convenient to the rail line, that would be another alternative route - I found the walk from Bookham station preferable.

OnGoldenPond · 04/01/2019 12:35

@Cobmum

DS is currently in year 12 at Esher. He is loving it Smile. He has found a large circle of new friends and his social life has expanded massively!

Have found communication with parents very good and his tutor has been marvellous. Parents are kept up to date with progress which is closely monitored and any problems quickly dealt with. It's a more adult environment than a school sixth form but they are definitely not just left to drift. Standards are high and results are good.

Cobmum · 06/01/2019 07:49

Thank you everyone! Does anyone know anything about St John’s please?

Wow that’s a great site for comparisons! thank you @pringles098
