WANTED: Simple Harvest Song

27 replies

Miaou · 01/09/2004 16:27

Eeek!! I've been asked to teach the kids in school a Harvest Song for next week (Thursday). It has to be unaccompanied; also fairly simple words as they will have to learn it. We've been singing the same one for the past three years and I'm desperate for a change! Anyone able to suggest anything?

It goes like this....

First the farmer sows his seed
First the farmer sows his seed
First the farmer sows his seed
Thank you for the harvest

Thank you God for harvest time
Thank you God for harvest time
Thank you God for harvest time
Thank you for the harvest

etc....

Can you see why I want to do a different one?

I've been quietly racking my brains for you for the last couple of hours Miaou. I'm sure I'll come up with something soon!

(Are we talking 4-11 yr olds?)

I've not found anything as simple as the one you've had.

Do you know the Pratt Green one? 'For the fruits of his creation' to the tune Ar Hyd Nos [All through the night]? So they may know the tune? There's quite a bit of repetition, so younger ones could join in on those bits. I'll type the words in for you, if you think this might be suitable.

I've a feeling there's something far more suitable, but it's currently lurking on the edge of my brain just out of reach! I'll ask dh later too when he's in.

albert · 01/09/2004 18:48

The only one I ever knew was 'All things bright and beautiful'. You could just sing the first verse because, if I remember correctly, it's quite long!

JanH · 01/09/2004 18:49

There's oats peas beans and barley grow though it might be a bit long for littlies.

Miaou · 01/09/2004 18:56

Like the oats and beans one, JanH - I have done the first verse and chorus with them before, didn't know there was more! So that might be suitable.

Roisin, if it doesn't drive you too mad, I would like the words for For the Fruits - we have actually got to do two songs but I was banking on getting the adults to join in with one, so that would be OK.

Thanks for your help!!

For the fruits of his creation;
thanks be to God
for his gifts to every nation,
thanks be to God;
for the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth's safe-keeping,
thanks be to God.

In the just reward of labour,
God's will is done;
in the help we give our neighbour,
God's will is done;
in our worldwide task of caring
for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing,
God's will is done.

For the harvests of his Spirit,
thanks be to God;
for the good we all inherit,
thanks be to God;
for the wonders that astound us,
for the truths that still confound us,
most of all, that love has found us,
thanks be to God.

Our primary school used to sing

"Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk in a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget."

Do you know that one? It's in Come and Praise - nice jolly tune. There are about 3 verses and one includes the line "AND A WIN FOR MY HOME TEAM" which they always used to shout. Can't find the whole thing on the internet though.

PS Computer had completely slipped my mind, can you tell? DH is never here when I think about it and I never think about it when he is here. Will try to ask him later (when he will be here) (if I haven't forgotten again by then!)

codswallop · 01/09/2004 19:09

I looooooove that

JanH · 01/09/2004 19:10

Should be "silk inside a chestnut shell" btw or it doesn't scan. It is a great song, they always used to love singing it, miserable new music teacher rejected it.

JanH · 01/09/2004 19:16

This is a CD of instrumental accompaniments+printed lyrics which includes it and lots of other nice ones. Has water of life too, I love that.

Miaou · 01/09/2004 19:16

I think we might have Come and Praise in school, that kind of rings a bell... will look tomorrow!

Re. computer - don't worry, no hurry!

Roisin - thanks for that - the littles could join in with the repeated bit... ace!

My ds loves it

roisin · 01/09/2004 19:29

OOohh yes, my kids love "Autumn Days" too ... vicars and snooty serious music-types are always trying to ban it for some reason - I don't know why?! But wouldn't it be very hard to sing unacc.? Long notes in the chorus, need some kind of rhythm/bass to carry it along?

roisin · 01/09/2004 19:31

I was brought up on "Come and praise" at primary school, and always get nostalgic when I get it out! I particularly enjoyed "There's a child in the streets" ... do you remember that one?

Teachers at my boys' school seem to be same age as me, as they sing loads of these at assembly still. The favourite seems to be "Colours of Day", with the recorder group playing the descant ...?!

OldieMum · 01/09/2004 20:24

Come, ye thankful people, come.
Raise the song of harvest home.
All is safely gathered in
'Ere the winter storms begin.
God, our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied.
Come, ye thankful people, come.
Raise the song of harvest home.

Babyannabel · 01/09/2004 20:27

"Nice green apples for you and me,
We eat them to make us so strong.
And now we are glad to say thank you to God
and sing him a harvest song."

Then substitute green apples for ham sandwich, or any food you like really.

Not sure how to describe the tune but a very sweet song when little ones sing it! Actions can be included as in eating apples and arms up for strong!
