Year 4 prep school. How much homework?

Just that really. How much homework is your year 4 prep / independent school child getting? And how much time do you spend either tutoring them yourself or someone else?
Ours gets 10 spellings a week as per year 4 national curriculum, 1 x maths but she and her chum do it usually during the class whilst everyone else finishes their class work and a small writing project / presentation fortnightly.
My concern is she's getting hazy on the times tables. Trying to do extra work at home is a battle whereas she's very happy to do it if her teaches gives it to her!

Mine gets even less than that but I’m not worried. They have long days and also music practice to do. If you’re worried about times tables I highly recommend using times tables apps - mine never complain about doing those because there are games.

We get a lot more than that!

Mental.maths one Monday, English on a Wednesday, a writing project at the weekend plus mathletics every day and spellings every few weeks.

Ad hoc homework comes on top too. It is quite an academically pushy prep. We don't have time to do.anything on top academically as she already has long days with sports and music too.

Yes she knew all the times tables by mid yr 3 which is why it's frustrating if she is now getting hazy! But good point there is always hit the button which she loves! Smile

My ds is in year 3 and has English on Monday and Wednesday (one short, one long), and maths and mental maths on a Tuesday and Thursday but nothing at the weekend. He also has spellings each week and is expected to read every day. Each homework only takes about twenty minutes, unless it’s a comprehension and then it normally takes all evening, in between stubborn resistance and general excuse-making Grin

Our prep is non selective, so maybe they need to do a bit more Wink

From year 3 onwards, dc at dd school are expected to do their prep at school. They have about 15 min a day after afternoon break. Boarders and day pupils from year 6 onwards have additional taught prep for 30 min in the evening. They only come home at 6pm, if they opt for after school stuff it can be as late as 9pm on several days a week, so very little time to do extra homework or tutering, especially if there is music (Dd has 3 instruments). 15 min reading before bed, 15 min music practice before breakfast and again before bed, and a quick spelling/math quiz on way to bus stop (takes us 2 minutes). School regularly sends to Winchester, DH, WA, Oxford High etc so not too worried about lack of time for homework/after school tutoring. We do a little bit of catch up/preparing stuff for next year in the (excessively long) holidays, though.
