I suppose I just ring the school on Wednesday and let them know that she cannot come...she is SO disappointed, poor thing.

Anyone know what their school's policy is on chicken pox?

Surely when the spots come out it is ok?

glitterfairy · 29/08/2004 08:12

Oh no that is scabs!

enid · 29/08/2004 08:29

her spots came out yesterday and today they are worse - she is pickled! dd2 had it last week and it seems to be a particularly nasty strain (if that is possible). Scabs certainly won't be out by Thursday - hopefully she'll be OK to go by the following Monday.

Feel so sorry for her missing the first day! and am worried that other kids will tease her about her spots

I believe that the guidelines from the NHS is that the child is OK 5 days after the onset of Chicken Pox. However, when it actually started is different to when the spots came out. If your dd has had spots for five days by the time that she is due to start school she should be OK. Should be, because not all schools are aware of the guidelines.
I would phone the school as soon as possible. If they are not happy, contact your GP and ask what the current guidelines are. However, if your dd is not feeling well on Thursday, it would probably be best not to send her anyway!

codswallop · 29/08/2004 09:02

codswallop · 29/08/2004 09:03

send he ont he following monday

enid · 29/08/2004 09:14

if I wait until they have all scabbed she'll be off for two weeks . will speak to school but I am planning to send her on Monday. Dh disagrees and says i should keep her off until all spots are gone, no matter what the school says . They are really really bad on her face, she looks like she has severe acne!

Enid, my bf's son had chicken pox just before he was due to start p1 (Scotland). SHe kept him off until he felt fully well, and now 3 years later is gald she did so. At the time there were lots of tears, and thinking that he would never settle, but he did, and as she waited until he felt better he was able to cope with it all. Hope your dd will feel better soon.

DS2 had chicken pox the week before his Christening, so I had to buy a silk hat for him to wear and no close up photos were taken. He too looked like someone had thrown a bag of spots at his face and his eyes were swollen shut.

Anyhow take care, and I'm sure you will do what is right for your dd.

enid · 29/08/2004 10:09

twiglett, thats what dh says...but I think missing the first two weeks and starting late would be even worse - what a dilemma!

that is very interesting deegward. I suppose I just have to be led by dd1 and see how she feels, although she is popping to go.

I remember I started a new school late at around 6 due to illness and the class "wrote" me a letter of welcome which I appreciated. Wonder if you could hint to the teacher to do similar.

Think I'd keep her off until next week to ensure she feels fit and also to avoid undue comments from other, perhaps more ignorant, parents and children.

Slinky · 29/08/2004 21:46

DD2 had CP in May and the nursery policy was to keep her off for 5 days from the start of spots. Our school has the same policy and I gather this is standard info now.

SoupDragon · 29/08/2004 22:22

DSs were both better after a week - all visible spots had scabbed over and they went back to nursery. Some hadn't scabbed but were clearly not going to and they were obviously better. Play it by ear. If she's feeling herself and visible spots have scabbed, send her next week.

I don't think she'll get teased because CP is so common at that sort of age - most of the children will have had it and will remember being spotty.

enid · 30/08/2004 07:09

well, she's covered in spots now and very very poorly - school is completely out of the question until we are out of this stage! Thanks everyone, will let you know what we decide to do xE
