Anyone been through here recently? Any comments?

It's posh and full of new money and just-moved-out-of-London types.

Ouch! That doesn’t sound positive. Have you personal experience from there?

yes. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good school. Well run and gets dc into the best schools. Teaching and extra curricular are all great. Just not my kind of people.
Apparently it's the "go-to" school when you move out of London to the country.

Horses for courses, but that's my opinion.
You could attend an event there and see what you think.

Appreciate your thoughts. Any other good schools around there / Abingdon?

Well you're spoilt for choice really, so it depends what you want.

The Manor Prep - now co-ed, up to age 11
Chandlings Manor - co-ed up to age 11
Abingdon Prep - boys up to 13
St Helens and St Katherine's girls age 9 - 18
St Andrew's Prep - co-ed up to age 13
then there's Cokethorpe, and Our Lady's Abingdon, both co-ed all through schools.

What things are important to you?

Friend just had two kids go through chandlings for ks2, very happy with it i think.

Jetset78 · 01/11/2018 21:32

Manor - just turned co-ed so very girl heavy atm but excellent local reputation
Chandlings - fantastic co-ed school, a true all rounder, would suit both sporty and musical types, not an academic hothouse but still feeds Abingdon and Magdalen.
Abingdon - boys only, prep school had a great atmosphere when we went but no sibling discount was a turn off!
St.H&St.K - girls only, academic hothouse.
St. Hugh's - co-ed, strong reputation but kids didn't seem very happy when we were showed around, very well mannered but didn't feel like they enjoyed it, missing some spark.

Have one of each and St H on right side of Abingdon for us. Also like that they can both stay till 13 (nothing to do with me not wanting them to grow up too quickly 😫). Not having many positive comments tho ☹️

I know it may seem a long way off, but what kind of senior school are you thinking about? Is boarding important to you?

11112222 · 02/11/2018 14:04

Pinewood?? Don't know anything about that one though..

Nodressrehearsal · 15/11/2018 22:27

It is so twee there-everyone so pleased with themselves!! Just feels really removed from real life but depends what you’re looking for. Hatherop Castle worth a look.

We passed on St Hughs in favour of Ab prep. The families at Ab prep are all very friendly. Ab prep is wayyy more liberal so it depends on what you want really. St. Hugh's they all stood up and said good morning whenever the head walked in. Ab prep they call all the teachers including the head by their first names as they believe respect is earned. St Hughs seemed to be more of the hunting/fishing/drinking set. Ab prep has mostly professional parents who do a wide variety of things. Ab prep automatically transfers to the senior school unless they tell you in year 5 that it isn't a good fit. That sealed the deal for us. I'd much rather DS spent time learning than prepping for CE. Moulsford prep would be another option.
