NFEA Tests

A colleague of my has been telling me about NFEA tests which she says are administered each year to all children.
Does anyone know anything about these?
I have never come across them before but she tells me that the results are more valid and important for the individual child than SATS.

They are NFER tests and run by an independent organisation.
Our secondary school has been doing them for ages about six weeks into year 7 (CATS tests) and statistically are a good predictor of GCSE results five years later, they also do them on sixth form entry for A level study.
Some schools might do them more frequently (maybe private schools who do not have sats)

oh yes they can't actually be studied for as a bit like puzzles (perhaps verbal and non-verbal reasoning) so may be a measure on inate ability rather than previous teaching

ah that would make sense , ds has done PIPS so far and will do CATS next year (Year 5)
