Hi. Can anyone offer some up to date info / feedback on MK?
Thinking of sending our son there next Sept year 7 on school swim programme. He has also been identified as gifted and talented academically so trying to balance education with his sport.
Would be grateful if anyone has any info / first hand experience of school especially swim programme and how their children cope with academic and swim combinations and if they enjoy school life.
Thanks

Certainly wouldnt be high on a list of schools for gifted and talented, academic results aren't great..basic info on website but look out for "or equivalent",in other words theyve combined results from A levels and BTEC,they say 20% of cohort got six or more 8/9 at gcse..ask exactly how many children that is??
Oxbridge doesnt feature most years
Swimmers dominate the school along with the other dominant group-children from abroad, this has knock-ons for all co curricular, sport apart from swimming is of a poor standard, youll find the same few children in plays, choirs etc-they often are staff members children
New Headmaster next year, new head of games this term, new head of swimming this term
We left the school as we felt the academics were poor and the sport for non swimmers was of a poor standard, some year groups had no sports fixtures.

If you are in the West Country have you looked at Plymouth College. If you are looking for boarding have you looked at Reeds in Cobham.

Mary19 · 27/09/2018 16:51

Depends what level but Bedes may also e worth a look www.bedes.org/senior-school/sport/sports-clubs/swimming.aspx

Pippykin · 27/09/2018 17:35

Thanks. Interesting about head teacher, he has only been there a couple of years from what I understand.
Looked at GCSE results and have improved year on year but you are right it is never as clear as state school results.
Did look at Plymouth college but hated boarding facilities, their head teacher is also leaving, also looked terribly run down. MK prep did look nice and homely for boarders.
Lots to think about thankyou

All I can say is Don’t do it! We have removed our children from the College. Swimmers dominate and are allowed to do whatever they want, never have to join in any other sports and rule over the other children. Boarding is just dominated by foreign children, mainly Chinese who don’t engage with the British children. Behaviour is not great either. Other sports apart from Swimming are terrible, they can hardly pull a team together.
Look further afield, wouldn’t recommended Plymouth College either but look in to Somerset
and you are in a different league.

To offer a different view... DS went to MK at 17 in y12. We pulled out of a poor choice for Y12 and repeated 6th form. The experience was very mixed. In the end, DS did much better than he, or we, expected and completed Devizes-Westminster, most of the DoE requirement and came out with three better than expected A level results.

We did not find the school helpful, at all, when we raised questions and specific teacher requests were ignored in favour of the school's convenience, but if the student pursues a teacher their persistence is generally rewarded.

As in most schools, some teaching is great and some isn't. We had better results in Maths and Physics than we expected, but the third subject projection was shown to have been a bit over-optimistic come results day. So, overall DS was enabled to do better than forecast, and the outcome was okay.

There is currently a lot of disenchantment among local professional families who should be important customers for the school because of the emphasis on the national swimming coaching.

It's probably worth saying that there is a significant paralympic programme which does well, and that the Chinese students (who come to learn English fluently to study in the UK/US and Australia) occasionally make acquaintances with locals.

It's not an Oxbridge mill, although there are some candidates most years, but the academic students go to decent RG universities. If your child is clever and local, choose Exeter School in preference. But for your middle-ability DC, if the location suits and the approach, you could do worse. The academic side is equivalent to a good comprehensive in a middle class SE catchment (there isn't one, but Plymouth is a grammar area). In rural Devon, it may be a decent bet if you don't want boarding, although Devon is huge and MK isn't central.

tavinbloom · 25/10/2018 18:13

One Oxbridge place every three or four years? really,I think youll find that the good comp in the south east would do better than that and parents of day pupils at the comp aren't paying 18k a year.
Ming is right ,local parents are getting more and more disenchanted,we know of two more local families that will be withdrawing dc at end of gcse,, and others that are considering it.

Considering the school but....Any truth in the story about students recently being expelled for Class A drugs; and some swimmers caught using steroids?

Maris24 · 27/03/2019 22:57

I am considering MK and Plymouth College for Year 12 bright swimmer from Sept. Can anyone confirm / deny above drugs especially for swimmers. Can anyone give me pros or cons for 2 schools? Have heard swimmers encouraged do BTEC at MK rather than A levels - is this true? Does anyone know average level of scholarships offered?

Tornado0518 · 05/04/2019 23:34

Yes, I hear that it is true. I have friends with children at the school in the swim program. They said that there was a problem in January or February where quite a few students on one of the swim squads were suspended. All boarders. I dont think they were expelled. But they were encouraged to leave and most have left. She said that Class A and C and drug equipment was found. The students at the school know the details as they talk and also students at other schools in the area know the details. They are really upset that nothing has been said to the parents. We are thinking about MK for our daughter, a swimmer because the swim program is great but the way the school has managed the situation is awful. I think we will have to talk to the new headmaster if we decide to send her to MK because they cant just hide these sorts of things from the parents.

tavinbloom · 08/04/2019 16:44

MK policy states Claas A -expulsion and police informed.

Benjimoon · 12/04/2019 13:54

I'm going to be extremely careful about what I say here because I'm the Deputy Head of Sixth Form at one of the schools repeatedly mentioned in this thread. I'll also try to be as unbiased as I can be.

When selecting a school, especially for boarding, I would recommend asking the school if your child can spend a day or two shadowing someone else in their intended year. The best basis for choosing a school quite often can't be seen or measured. It is often down to how the school feels for the student and how they feel they would be accepted by the 'school community'.

There are schools out there that feel friendly and welcoming and some really don't.

Obviously academic results play a huge part too, but for many students I find that happiness tends to bring out their academic best.

Good luck with your search, and maybe (just maybe) I'll be seeing your DS very soon. :-)

Domincus1 · 21/04/2019 15:08

I would not recommend either schools. If you are based in west Devon it has to be Truro or Exeter. Both Plymouth College and Mount Kelly are in a state of decline. I have spoken to a number of parents at Plymouth College who told me that the old headmaster was a tyrant and caused almost all of the really good teachers to flee and that probably explains why the GCSE results have fallen. If you must remain in Plymouth then the state grammar will give you much better value for money. I went to the Plymouth College open day last and the place is really tatty and it was embarassing to see the outdated facilities. I heard a rumour is that the place is in serious financial trouble and the staff are about to lose their pensions - which will undoubtedly cause even more teachers to leave.

helpmum2003 · 21/04/2019 15:19

Regarding class A drugs I would say most senior schools have drug issues of one type or another, state and private (often kids have more money).

Those schools which say they don't are naive at best, disingenuous at worst. What matters is how the school handles it.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 23/04/2019 06:57

Caveat: I’m biased.
I’d take a good long look at Millfield before plumping for MK. Swimming is a really tough one and I personally know 2 national champions for their year group both give up swimming pretty much as soon as they went to boarding school, despite being sent to exceptional schools with strong swimming emphasis and very strong school support for both kids in terms of them pursuing swimming. It’s a hard sport to keep up. One of my dc switched to millfield from a very academic and well known school and, although not s swimmer himself, was impressed with the swimming set-up and thinks the 2 people we know who gave up the sport would not have done so had they been at millfield. We were also impressed with the academic side and the pastoral culture (as an aside, my dc says far less cliquey, far less drugs, far less stuff like anorexia at millfield compared to previous school). My take is that because pretty much 100% of the kids have a sports focus they breed a culture of channelling their obsessions into something healthy, and taking a very meritocratic approach to life in general. It breeds a healthy environment so long as kids are able to be resilient in the first place (if not then boarding school might not be the best option).

tavinbloom · 23/04/2019 08:43

Dd was at mk,we removed her for several reasons, several of the swimmers she knew were very open about the fact that that they were at mk because the scholarships they had were far more generous than they were offered at millfield,mk seemed to be going for quantity over quality.
