School help!

Hi

We are currently expats but may be moving back to UK next summer, 2 DCs are at a British curriculum school here in years 4 and 6, all their schooling has been outside the UK.

We have no house in UK anymore so can move anywhere that’s commutable to central London although preferably SW side as DH will probably need to fly regularly so not too far from airports.

I have no idea where to even start!! I’m conscious that DS1 going into year 7 will be tricky to sort a school place if we leave it too long so he’s the priority. Happy with state or private is an option too. Looking for a nurturing school with good results and good facilities.

Any suggestions welcome........

Well what kind of schooling are you looking for. Academical pushy? Well rounded? Sporty? Is there a chance you will move in the future? If so I would reccomend looking at schools with boarding option. Do you want both children at the same school or happy for different schools? Any special interests you want yo cultivate? Is it essential that they go to oxbridge or what have you?

Hersetta427 · 19/09/2018 15:10

Do you want state or private schools?

Autumn101 · 19/09/2018 15:14

Well rounded, not looking at Oxbridge type preparation. I’d say the school they are at now is equivalent to a mid level private so around that standard?? Both quite bright but not gifted. If we moved again they’d come to, boarding isn’t something we’d consider.

Preferably at same school too

Downsend in Leatherhead? Will now be going to 16, co-ed.

Close to m25 for easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow.

sd249 · 19/09/2018 20:11

Horsham is a nice area. Commutable to London and the schools are very good in that area. Near to Gatwick.

Also St Albans area (north london but a 30 min drive to healthrow and 15 mins from Luton airport) is only 30 mins max into London and schools in that area are very good.

Have lived in both.

Autumn101 · 20/09/2018 06:47

sd249 - Horsham has been recommended by some friends too so definitely one for the list!

Kent might be an option. You get lots for your money. Lots of good schools fast train line into London. Canterbury for example.Or Villages surrounding Ashford.

Autumn101 · 20/09/2018 14:23

We lived in Kent previously, would consider it but it’s quite a trek round to Heathrow.......

Too many choice

Downsend in Leatherhead? That was one of my choices for schools.

We live in Epsom near London. What area do you live in? First of all you need to figure out what type of school you want to send them to. Then go from there.

I looked at schools in the area and phoned up asking for a tour of the place. I also collected prospectuses and spoke with parents about the schools we were considering. Above all trust your gut feeling about the school too. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Finding out as much information as you can is always recommended.

What ultimately made me pick a school was whether or not children were being stretched and challenged. Also sounds shallow but I made my decision based on what I read on the websites of the schools I visited with my family in tow as well as answers to actual questions I asked.

Listen to the gossip. Oftentimes shopping centres are a good place to find out what other people think of the school. Shopkeepers are another good source of information.

It's v tricky to do state schools from overseas. You can't apply until you get back, so you will have missed opportunity to apply for your DS going into Y7 in Sept 19. (You would need to apply in Y6). In a similar situation to you, we went for independents as it was more certain.

To research independents, best resource we found was Good Schools Guide, at least as a starting point. Subscribe online and you can search potential options.

Like you, we could live anywhere, so had quite a large search area for schools. We started by finding secondary school and then picked a prep/primary for our other child close to that and found a house close to that.

In your situation, think you have a few options -

  1. a prep for Y7 and Y8 for DS1 (probably taking Common Entrance) and then move to secondary in Y9. (However, FYI, in this case, you'd have to check process for entry in Y9 , as for most/many of these schools they will be doing the pretest in next few months, getting their conditional place in Y6.) You may find they offer you another route as you are overseas.
  2. Go straight for independent secondary with an entry in Y7.
  3. Straight through school with prep and secondary.

Knowing what i know now, if the school you choose has Y7, I would go for that option over going for a prep followed by Common Entrance and joining in Y9. And then prep for your younger child. (My reason being that given the application process for Y9 secondary you would basically need to pick and apply for a prep and a secondary now in any case for your elder DC! And also, Common Entrance year (Y8) is not particularly interesting - loads of exam practice and fair amount of pressure. Fine if you have been leading up to it all through prep, but don't think there is any great advantage if you have only been in prep a short time.)

A few options to look at around Surrey. Downsend (now going to 16) has already been mentioned above. Other prep schools in area - Danes Hill, Kingswood House (also now goes to 16, boys only), Aberdour, Feltonfleet.

Secondary schools you could look at - St Johns, Epsom College, City of London Freemans, Reeds (boys only), Reigate Grammar, Box Hill, Ewell Castle, Cranleigh, Royal Grammar School, Hampton, Reigate Grammar. If you wanted to live closer to London, you could look at JAGS, Allyns, Tiffin, Dulwich etc, Kingston Grammar (also a whole host of other grammars Sutton, Nonsuch, Surbiton,) Most of these (possibly all) go from Y7, some from earlier. Some more academically selective than others. There are lots of others - choosing a rough area and doing a search on GSG will give you a good list. (List above mostly co-ed/boys ... if looking for girls there are other options too.)

Then ring round admissions to get a better view of application process. You can even ask secondary schools which prep schools send kids to give you a good list for your younger DC.

We visited a range of abilities and areas to get a feel for the schools and then were able to narrow down to short list for application. Didn't know the academic level of our DC so did apply for a few.

Autumn101 · 25/09/2018 10:58

baked beans - that’s really useful thanks.

Ideally I’d love a prep and secondary all the way through to 18 and both boys at same place so think we’ll start researching those. Technically the school they are at is a prep and DS1 this year is doing a lot more CE type curriculum so they should hopefully be ok. Obviously there will be differences in some areas but their core maths/English/science should be up to scratch!
