Gcse English tuition

DS2, Yr 11, appears to be reasonably bright, getting 7s in his end of Yr 10 mocks for maths/science/computing type subjects and expected (according to his teachers) to do better at the end of this year.

English and History are a difference story, getting 2/3.

I don't know what to do to help him. He seems to be doing all the work and practice that his teachers set but the marks aren't improving. And, whilst I like to think I'm literate (A at O level, don't you know Grin) Gcse seems to be beyond me. I have no idea what the questions are asking or what they're looking for.

So, should I be asking the school for more help or is it time to employ a tutor? Is there time to get him a pass? If I look for a tutor what do I need to ask to find out if they'll be able to help him? I've tried asking for local recommendations without success. A teacher at local comp (not his) who has recently moved into the area is advertising and has spaces but I know nothing about her.

I'd look for a qualified teacher with classroom experience teaching the new 1-9 spec. Bonus if they have done exam marking.

Thanks. That appears to be exactly what she's offering. Qualified teacher and examiner, and currently head of English in a challenging comp. I don't know how to check that though.

I also wonder why a HOD wants to do extra tutoring and how they have time!

Do you think it's possible to change a 2 in English Language in July to a 5 by May?

I suppose that's really down to your DS! A good teacher/tutor will do everything in their arsenal to help students achieve their potential. I've certainly seen those kind of improvements before when the student is on board, willing to take advice and work hard.
