My son is 13yrs (14 in October) and about to start his second year in secondary school here in Kildare, Ireland. In 2021 we are moving to England, what year will be be joining in the September? I need to start looking at good schools in three areas of the country.

Thankyou for your help

A 13 yo (turning 14 in Oct 2018) would in England be starting year 9 in September 2018.

So y10 in 2019, y11 in 2020, and y12 (lower 6th in 'old speak') in 2021. So a good time to move!

Could someone pleeeease check I've counted that right!!

Yes that’s right, you’re looking at sixth form education when you move.

6th form or college

Assuming he's taken his final exams in Ireland (as terms differ) it's an ideal time

Zarag · 21/08/2018 13:06

That's a problem. Here in Ireland (Republic) final exams are taken in 6th Year, your equivalent of Year 2 of further education.

Copied; Secondary education is generally attended between the ages of 12 and 18. It is broken down into the three-year Junior Cycle (age 12-15) and the two-year Senior Cycle (age 16-18). Each of these cycles ends in a set of state exams, called the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate. Students study 9 or 10 subjects for the Junior Certificate and 6 or 7 subjects for the Leaving Certificate. Places for university and college courses are based on grades received for the Leaving Certificate exams. Secondary school students take a combination of compulsory subjects (English, Irish and Math) and optional subjects (French/German or other languages, History, Geography, Music, Business, Art, Technology, Wood/Metal work, Home Economics and more).

The leaving certificate is studied for the final two years at school as are A levels or IB in the UK. Just different nomenclature of years / grades. Sixth form is the same as Year 12 and 13, and covers the final two years of school.

@ksb So would his Junior Cert suffice as 'exams taken' before he starts sixth form in England?

Yes it's the same as GCSEs

Timing should be perfect
