Haberdashaske girl Vs Latimer prep school

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're enjoying the summer break. I need to enroll my DD for 7+ and we are thinking to enroll her into 2 schools in North (NLC & Haberdashaske?) and 3/4 in the South as her brother school is there and we would like to move in the south to reduce his commute (LEH, Bute, Putney high school & Latimer prep?). I found out that the test for Haberdashaske & Latymer prep is on the same day so we need to choose. I know that Haberdashake is supposed to be a good school academically with a good pastoral care but don't know much about Latimer prep. If you had the same dilemma or know something about those schools which could help on the decision making it would be very appreciated!
Have a nice day!

We have a clash between LEH & JAGS!

I would 100% move south and make life easier for everyone, your dd is sure to get into one of the schools on your list. Most of the schools offer alternate days anyway for seven-plus because there are always some clashes, so I'd definitely also contact them and see what they say

EglantineP · 16/08/2018 10:24

PS I know for sure LP offer alternate days as I know a girl who sat on one of them a few years ago, so double check your info

Aichko2018 · 16/08/2018 11:21

Yeh I Know. It’s so tricky and stressful to choose the right school and make her ready!

The response received yesterday was a no as the date was set from some time from LP

Barnes and Richmond aren't on the list, but Putney and Wimbledon are. Pupils can use the coaches (but not the evening late coach) from year 3 (though it says JAPS pupils can't start until after their first half term - no idea why!)

Aichko2018 · 16/08/2018 13:31

Thank you! I saw it on their website too. We can be at Putney for my son school

VioletFlamingo gave a good list for SW London schools with 7+ entry. I would add Notting Hill and Ealing school which is also a very good school. LEH have an extensive bus network, so a good option if she can get in. Then you could move anywhere you want from Fulham to Twickenham and even Barnes.
I would recommend moving to SW London - a lot of people, if they had had the chance, would have moved out of N London as the competition is so fierce for spaces, probably because the state schools are not that good vs demand (on average and by comparison).
As for state, you will find a good school in Richmond but it will be a different game and you will need tutoring for sure for 11+. Vineyard, Sheen Mount, Barnes Primary I believe are thought to be the best. But plenty of kids in Kew (check Queens' website), Twickenham get to the top secondaries too.

EglantineP · 16/08/2018 15:40

In your situation I'd move to Barnes Primary catchment area and try your dd for LP, Bute, Putney High. I know your son isn't complaining now, but my friend went to St Paul's from your area of London and 30 years on he is still bitter about the commute.

Rookiemummy2018 · 16/08/2018 16:01

Then of course you also have the option for going for a private prep in London, with no assessment but good school that will take your daughter to 11+. If you get a place in Newland House, Twick Prep, Kew College, Broomfield House, even Ibstock in Sheen which is in the up, and the Chiswick preps which I am less familiar with but you can research. All good preps for 11+ in SW London. Check their websites for destinations.

Rookiemummy2018 · 16/08/2018 16:02

or Kensington Prep in Fulham (which I believe also has 7+) is a very good girls school too.

Aichko2018 · 16/08/2018 16:22

Thanks! We will do our best to have choices in SW and make everything easy for us.

Wow EglantineP it’s scary! I don’t want that and I know it would benefit him and I will be more confident to let him take bus to go home if he missed the school bus.

I did contacted ibistock in April and could even have a space that her year 2 but was not too sure. I am about to contact Kew college and will look to the ones you suggested. Thank you!!!!

Forgot Kensington prep, another very good school, especially if you based yourself in Hammersmith or Fulham both easy for SP. Good luck!

whenwillsummerend · 16/08/2018 20:54

I think you're overthinking the whole thing. Move somewhere nearish to St Paul's, Hammersmith, Fulham, Putney etc and then enrol your daughter in a Prep School or state school nearby. If your DS is at St Paul's you'd be mad to be looking at JAGs, LEH etc when you've got Bute House, ken prep, PHS, WHS and a host of good schools to 11plus nearby. If your DD is reasonably bright she'll get in somewhere at 11plus- it is easier for girls- more choice.

VioletFlamingo · 22/08/2018 22:36

It sounds like you are entering your DD to a lot of schools for 7+. Have you spoken to her Headteacher and explained you are potentially moving South? They should be able to advise you on whether your DD is the right level to enter for Bute, Latymer and Habs.
You need to narrow down your area and then look at schools.
E.g. if you are going to live in Fulham apply to Bute, Latymer, Ken Prep and then if she doesn't get those schools like Fulham Prep or Ravenscourt Park should have spaces. Ultimately, if she is around the academic level of Bute then she should get an offer at at least one of her other choices even if she misses out on Bute itself (probably the most competitive).

I wouldn't sit your DD for more than 4 schools (I am a London prep school teacher).

Aichko2018 · 25/08/2018 17:19

EglantineP thanks!

whenwillsummerend I love bute and hope she will have an offer. We moved a lot last 5 years and if possible I would like to avoid 11+ and find a good one where she would not necessary need to move. LEH has a good school buses service until chiswick/Hammersmith area so seems do able.

Aichko2018 · 25/08/2018 17:47

VioletFlamingo thank you for your comments. I agree that ideally she should sit for no more than 4. So far she is enrolled for 3 in south and 1 in north. In our case the education is our legacy and we will move to a location equidistant of both school (15-20mn with school buses if possible), we need to choose the school first. We thought of the moving during the summer break and havent talked to the Headteacher yet. Without those entry points of 4+, 7+ or 11+ it would be easier I guess.

there is nowhere that is 20 minutes from Habs and also 20 minutes from St. Paul's! (assuming you don't have a helicopter)

Aichko2018 · 26/08/2018 20:04

laptopdisaster the comment was for the schools choice in south!

oh I see, I misunderstood. was wondering how you were going to manage that feat of traffic avoidance!
