I know this is a site for mums mainly but I find mums often give the best advice Smile. I'm starting my A-levels in September but I am not certain what to chose. I'll definitely do English Lit and Psychology but need one more subject. Any recommendations? I'd like something that offers some variation but isn't too difficult ConfusedGrinall advice is highly appreciated

My mother has recommended I chose four, just in case I change my mind about philosophy and regret choosing it. Thinking maybe maths if I get the grades or Economics.

I think your mum is right. DS is planning maths, biology, psychology and philosophy if school let him take 4. He says if his biology gcse isn't too promising he'll switch that for English. His sixth form does AS levels so he has the option of dropping one at the end of Y12 (or sooner if it's too much for him!)

All my DCs did Psychology. They all hated it.

I tried to tell them but Hmm

English, Maths and Physics qualifies you for just about any degree except MFL.

If you want to do law you need to get into the best university you can (the hardest to get into which you can) and for that it is wise to have at least 2 facilitating subjects eg see these - clare.cam.ac.uk/subjectchoice-alevelchoice/.
Children at academic state and private schools will usually do at least 2 sometimes 3 facilitating subjects. I am a lawyer - I did three.

History can be a good one to do for law nbut if you would get A* or A in sciences and a lower grade in history then always go for the ones you are best at (if you want to be a lawyer as you need high grades- for some law firms at least AAB in good hard subjects).

I would do English, History and Economics if I were you (or English, History and either psychology or philosophy). English and history are facilitating subjects. Economics is not but is particualrly highly regarded (and also really interesting - both my daughters who are lawyers did it and both my twins did it who are currently at university and I really like it as a subject too and it's very useful in life)

Update: DS is going for English, maths, philosophy and psychology to start with at AS level.
I gather psychology is very marmite so he's got the scope to drop it if needed.
