Half term? Now?

OK, stupid question from a non-UK mum. Is it really half term over there now? In which case, when does term end? Here in Ireland, my secondary school sons finish up tomorrow, while my younger child in primary school will get Summer holidays in a month

Most places in the Uk are this week, although I do know of a few who are next week. We finish on 21st July for summer hols.

Yes it is half term here in the UK. The children go back to school on Monday until Friday 20th July. It's the same for primary and secondary school.

Wow the end of July, almost? And when do they start back for the new academic year then? Ours start more or less on the 1st of September

Yeh, we're the first few days into September too. I wish they'd change the terms tbh. The days are nice and long now, but by the time we break up for the summer holidays, they are starting to get shorter again. The weather is usually much nicer in July than it is in August as well!

We are on half term this week and next week and break up for summer on 27th July. Go back around 5th Sept I think.

I prefer the 2 weeks here and a week less in summer.

We are the same as gg.

So different. Our primary kids get two months off in summer (July and August), and teh secondary kids get three.

I imagine you have longer breaks at some other time of year, though, like Christmas/New Year or in spring

NoNoNo,

Yes different hols here - unfortunately the half term breaks rarely coincide with those at home (I'm from Dublin originally and visit regularly on school breaks). State schools have three terms, each having one week off mid term. They also get two weeks off at Xmas, two at Easter and 6 in the summer. As the summer term ends on July 20th, they have half term this week.

The equivalent of Junior Infants also attend school for a full day - the same as all the other primary classes. Our school starts at 9am and ends at 3.15pm. Only other difference is that they don't get strict daily homework like they do at home... and no 'Gaeilge' to learn!!!
