congratulations!
what would you like to teach? think there are 2 routes in, doing a pgce and specializing in primary/secondary. or a job based on the job sort of thing

the tta (teacher's training agency) ??

schneebly · 30/05/2007 13:26

well done btw - I am currently doing my degree and hoping to go into primary teaching when I finish.

It might be worth contacting some colleges/unis that offer teacher training course to see what the time scale is, when you have to apply etc. They might send you lots of exciting things to read.

Can I also recommend you do some observations in a school to really make sure it is what you want to do?

themaskedposter · 30/05/2007 13:30

thanks!

weeeelllll, I am entertaining the idea of secondary science. I got a BSc majoring in zoology in NZ a fair few years ago, and I really rather enjoy all of the sciences as such ...

That sounds great!
Are we short of science teachers?
If so, they will welcome you with open arms and maybe give you a little golden hello....

schneebly · 30/05/2007 13:33

golden hello!

themaskedposter · 30/05/2007 13:35

yeah spudmasher, I know what you mean. Secondary schools can be a scary place these days ... I am just in the process of seriously thinking about it, and would like to find out all the details of what it entails etc.

Also, I would like to train over here (UK) so when we eventually move back to NZ I will have the training (and hopefully some experience) under my belt so to speak!

I am liking that 'golden hello' schneebly!

themaskedposter,

The best thing you could do is some observing in a local school. I suggest that you spend some time in both a primary school and secondary school. You will be asked why you want to teach a particular age range at an interview.

Maybe you could get a job as an exam inviligator or another support staff job in a school to see what its like. Learning to interact with lively teenagers can be difficult. Getting experience of working with teenagers would be useful before trying to teach them!

Teaching is one of those jobs that people either absolutely love or absolutely hate.
I think that teaching is a bit like acting/ You need to be sort of person who enjoys performing.

If you want to be able to teach in NZ I think the PGCE is more likely to recongised than the GDP route.

very sound advice frances5

I think I will indeed look into the options of an exam inviligator or another support staff job in a school to see what it's like.

Also then I can converse with teaching staff and get a 'feel' for the whole package.

Thank you

If you live anywhere near Bath, Bath Spa University have an open evening next week:

Teacher Training Evenings
We regularly hold PGCE open evenings for those wanting to become a teacher. There is no need to book a place for these events, just come to our Newton Park campus anytime between 1700h and 1900h and follow the direction signs and you will be able to find out about our full range of PGCE courses.

Teacher Training Evenings

If you don't then it might be worth looking at universities etc near you.

Good Luck.
