a sixth form college have expressed an interest in me. I went for a part time general drama teacher but they are now thinking of offering me to teach the B tec which is more performance based

so....

I would love that

BUT

Really want the experience of AS and A2 - but when they phoned I didn't mention this

Should I email them and say this or wait until the final offer?

Lots of schools like to 'trial' you before you get AS A2.

can't really advise. How much do you have your heart set on the A level stuff? Would you enjoy the school if you did Btec? Can you negociate A level for next year?

BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 16:27

not totally sure about btec - not really sure what it entails - directing them in shows i think.

perhaps I could ask for some co teaching? Should i wait for this until they offer or mentio it now

Don't know, I've never been involved in the Hiring of staff.....jsut a bog standard classroom teacher me!

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 16:33

Remember that tertiary colleges are on the lecturers payscales and not teacher ones so pay is worse and hols are worse as well- Just double check that that is the case before you take the job.

BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 17:00

Pixiefish - not so worried about that at present.

OP posts:
Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 17:31

Plus your time in tertiary college won't count on your teacher's pay scale either. You're probably not bothered but just thought I'd point it out

Agree with martianbishop in that they probably wouldn't offer AS or A2 to a new lecturer unless you had previous experience. Best thing to do if you fancy it is go for it and prove yourself and then get given the A level classes.

I was at my last permanent post for a few years before the HEad of Departmetn gave me A level. It also depends on the timetabling

BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 17:35

I have asked if I can either co teach or have a mentor in the a level stuff

OP posts:
BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 19:47

thought i woudl be inudated with ideas

Shows a real willingness and tbh you'll probably end up doing some of the teaching at times and once the head of dept has seen that you're capable of it you'll get a level groups.

One other thing I'll say though is that A level is hard going. Prep for a one hour session could take 4 or 5 hours and marking is hard going as well.

I teach English and have taught A level in school and in a technical college to help out for a term and it does massively increase the workload.

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 19:50

I have just looked at your OP and in answer to your question- take the job- if the money doesn't bother you- then take it and once you're actually in you'll be able to negotiate a lot more- maybe not for this year but once you prove yourself

BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 19:51

P - yes I am sure it will be hard work but I really want to get some experieince under my belt now -

OP posts:
Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 19:54

Go for it. You won't regret it- also if you wanted to work in a school at a later date the a level experience would stand you above other candidates who didn't have A level exp.

blackandwhitecat · 25/05/2007 19:55

Beatroot said sixth form college not tertiary. Sixth form colleges have their own pay scale which is pretty much on a par with schools. I work at a SFC having worked at a school previously. If you want exp with AS/A2 then ask them what the score is. It could be that they have the staffing they need for this and the only gap is in Btec but they should be able to tell you whether it would be a possibility in the future. You can't guess and we can't help you about these things, you'll have to talk to them direct.

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 19:58

The sixth form colleges that I know of in this area are ont he lecturers pay scales which is deiffernt to schools- considerably.

I am in Wales though so this could be different in England

blackandwhitecat · 25/05/2007 19:59

Check it is a 6th form college and not just a sixth form section of an FE college. 6th form colleges have a common pay scale which is equivalent to teachers in school. Holidays are the same too. I've worked in 2 diff 6th form colleges and been to many more. Unless it is different in Wales.

Pixiefish · 25/05/2007 20:11

It's a 6th form college I'm talking about. I was offered a job there and declined it due to the pay. The local schools don't have 6th form- the college is instead of it.

Anyway- doesn't really matter- i did say that Beety should double check

BeatrootandBenedick · 25/05/2007 20:25

6th form college
pay on par with state schools
I have now asked - I was not sure if I should ask before they make their final offer but I have as I don't think I want the job if they cannot accomodate this request. It is far away and I need to know I am getting the sort of experience I need

OP posts:
blackandwhitecat · 25/05/2007 20:32

Right... You can see the common pay scale adopted by sixth form colleges here.
www.askatl.org.uk/atl_en/pay/pay_calc/sixth_form/sixth_form_scales.asp

It also says here, 'The pay increases maintained the pay position of teachers in sixth form colleges relative to teachers in schools who also received a 2.5% pay increase for 2006-07. The pay scales for all teachers in sixth form colleges are at least equal to, and in many cases greater than, those for teachers in schools.'

Maybe the 6th form colleges you're talking about haven't adopted the common pay scale?? I didn't know there were any but I'd rule out any sixth form college that didn't adopt this straight away. That's just my view but it's certainly worth asking why they haven't adopted it if they haven't.

Oops sorry Beatroot, cross posted.
