i know someone who works at a school that was in special measures, new head brought in, and it has been absolutely turned around

Special measures means 'special measures' i.e. money thrown at it from government, new leadership, detailed planning and close monitoring.

I'd rather my children went to one of these schools than simply poor performing and possibly even mediocre!

talcyoyo · 24/05/2007 19:31

Thanks all
like i said, i'm not stressing,
was honestly upset when i read the ofstead report......but didn't want to kick off with a knee jerk reaction.

Talked to head of the schol that my dds are at now...
she said more or less what malorytowers suggested.

The report basically said that the teachers had no motivation and low expectations of the children!

I think that the main problem in these failing schools is the intake rather than the teaching itself though. I personally would rather my dc`s were not in a class where the teacher spent more time on crowd control than actual teaching. Its no wonder the staff lack motivation & have low expectations of the children. You cant blame them really. No amount of money thrown at these schools will change the fact that a large number of the children probably come from unmotivated, uninterested homes, so they in turn bring their bad attitudes to school & disrupt the learning of those who do want to learn something.

Hard to read between the lines on the ofsted report

Cant access actual report at the moment for some reason. Was able to view the old one, but not the new one. It says that Greenhoe is a middle school and the secondary school is Hammond High on the same site. Couldnt access report for Hammond high either, but its results dont look all that great. Are there any other options you could look into?

talcyoyo · 24/05/2007 20:47

Oh!,

thanks for looking anyway.

options are to get them to village school on bus

or move

We'll stick with it though....

am convinced(well, hoping) that it will improve.

You never know. Its not desperate yet anyway because theyre not in the actual senior school. Thats when all the problems start.
Good luck

talcyoyo · 24/05/2007 20:51

Thanks sparkleprincess

I wouldn't touch it, I'm afraid.

To 'fail' an Ofsted, you really have to do quite badly on a couple of categories (teaching, management, behaviour etc., result), not just one.

Failing schools do sometimes get turned round very quickly with a good head brought in, and lots of money thrown at it.

But it often takes a long time, especially if there are genuine staffing problems, including motivation.

talcyoyo · 24/05/2007 21:28

Hmmmmm....they've got 4 months.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 24/05/2007 21:31

Having worked in a failing school and then it going into special measures - then no, I wouldn't want to send my child there if I could possibly avoid it. SM schools IME get there for good reasons and it takes more than a couple fo months for them to sort those underlying issues out.

Not read report yet, will go and look.

Hulababy · 24/05/2007 21:32

The shcool I worked at got out relatively quickly, but awas still at least a year IIRR. And the exam results are still very poor. Left now so not sure what the actual school situation is day to day.

Hulababy · 24/05/2007 21:34

h, the report isn't on yet by look of it.

kid · 24/05/2007 21:35

What are peoples opinions on a school given 'notice to improve'

kid · 24/05/2007 21:36

(sorry, don't mean to steal your thread but was interested if people would count special measures the same as notice to improve)

talcyoyo · 24/05/2007 21:37

Don't really know why....
we read it online last week!

will have a look and try link it if we can
