Would you want to know your kids IQ?

Just interested as I was given the opportunity today to be connected to someone who would do an IQ test on a preschooler. Though I was tempted I don't like the idea of sticking a number on a kid

My IQ was tested by an educational psychologist when I was at school (not sure why). My parents knew the results but didn't tell me. Then, several years later, at a time in my life when I felt like a failure, my mum got it out and showed it to me. It is v high (sorry for the stealth boast but relevant to the story!) and this gave me confidence and helped me to overcome the difficulties I was having.

Incidentally I'd say yes for an older child but not for a pre-schooler. IMO it's too random at that age.

I’d have reservations about the accuracy of an IQ test on a pre-schooler. I don’t think I’d bother unless there were concerns about the child’s development.

DS1 did have some intelligence testing done when he was 4, as part of ASD assessments.

They tested verbal, spatial, fluid and working intelligence IIRC, and discussed each separately in the report, rather than just giving us a raw IQ score. The way DS1’s test was done was useful for us to get an idea of DS1’s strengths and weaknesses, to help us better support him.

Incidentally, I’m now getting adverts for IQ tests on Mumsnet after opening this thread Grin

Are CAT tests, Midyis etc also IQ tests?
Do they test similar things? I understand 100 is normal and they report up to 140.
When Ed Psychs test children, are they using CAT tests?

I have the score of my dyslexic DS and not the other one, as he was tested as a result of being investigated for dyslexia. It was, a bit like Mannix, used to comfort him when things were difficult.

In specific cases of SN maybe. Otherwise, can't see the point. And don't get the argument that an IQ test would tell you how hard to push them: surely your general knowledge of your child's personality, emotional stamina, interests, and plans in life would be a far better guide for that.
