Independent school for DS with ASD

Hello! We're looking at our local independent schools for our very bright DS, who also has autism. He has a 1:1 at the local state primary at the moment, but we're now wondering if he might be able to develop more independence by being in a smaller class and in a more academic environment, which would suit him.

Have you been through a similar situation? If so, I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience of an independent school supporting your child with special needs. Thank you!

My son is in mainstream. Just to let you know although EHCP's are banded all EHCP's should clearly list the provision required and the amount needed and not just give a banded amount which is illegal. If you haven't sign up to specialneedsjungle website which has all the information. I think it entirely depends on the school and the child. What is clear is that funding is being reduced in mainstream drastically. As parents in Hackney we have been fighting this and are now taking Hackney Council to court over illegal cuts and poor provision. I am now moving to Dorset and my son does not have an EHCP but I have found a private school I am happy with. I would have preferred to stay with state schools but I can't risk being on a waiting list for a school that may not have good provision, nor wait for him to settle, jump through hoops and wait over 20 weeks for an EHCP......sorry state of affairs!

Most independent schools will charge extra for additional support since they can't claim funding in the way the state sector can.

DS2 doesn't have ASD but does have SEN and our school doesn't charge any extra for the support but from speaking to other parents using other independent schools that is not the norm.
