SATS....

Hi,
my es has his SATS next week, and I can't get to excited abotu it....I mean, they won't actually effect his future, will they...I mean, they are not really important as such are they? I mean, tis not gonna show up on a CV later, his SATS score, is it?
Am I the only one so "lax" about it all?

No, I really wasn't faffed about them at all tbh, and as I recall the school didn't make them sit in an exam style environment. GCSE's are the only ones, I'd bother worrying about but then I've only got a year to go before ds starts his course work. I'm confident it'll be fine. Of course, I may then think about his further education but, one thing at a time.

At DS's school they use the results to put the boys in sets next year. It is Very much an exam-style environment.

How can they do that? I mean the Kids go all to different schools, aren't they?

clerkkent. They definitely don't here. They assess them on the work that they've done to put them in sets.
SATS are really to test the teachers and help determine the strength of the school and it's teaching.
Personally, I think they're tested quite enough, they're not lab rats. And the only ones that will count with prospective employers are GCSE's and the higher education that follows them.

clerkKent · 11/05/2007 17:28

rantinghousewife, I agree completely about SATS, but DS goes to a grammar school where they get tested endlessly. It is part of the culture there, and the boys had to be good at tests to get in to the school in the first place! They only have setting in Maths, English and foreign languages.

spudmasher · 11/05/2007 17:32

3andnomore they are not that important to your son's fututre and no one should be getting their knickers in a twist about them and the children should certainly not be stressed by it. They are 10 and 11 for goodness sake!

Research shows that children who get level4 are on track to get their grade C and above at GCSE but that does not mean that they won't if they get level 3 at the and of KS2. Nor does it mean that a child who gets straight 4s who has been pumped full of whsmith books will get their GCSE at grade C or above.

It is all to test the teaching of the school and the teachers in that school.

Which is why I am terrified.........

Head went into ds2s classroom today and did her annual SATS rant with the pointing finger routine..."You must have early nights next week. These results are important to your future. You must get good results." That along with the letter sent home instructing us to cancel all out of school activities during SATS week just confirms what a barmy school he goes to.

No, we're very lax about them here too. The only use they have is as internal tracking devices. So for example, our primary school also does the 'optional' ones for Yrs3-5, and they are just used to track a child's progress and for target-setting. No pressure at all.

And here they are most definitely not used for setting at secondary school - schools use CATs, Edinburgh reading tests and general performance in lessons for that.

My 14 year old is doing her SATs this week and yes, we're all very relaxed/lax about that too. I refuse to stress or have her stressed about them. Time enough for all that pressure in a few years with GCSEs and A levels.

Most of the boys from my son's class (including son) are at scout camp this weekend. Son's teacher just said it can't be helped but make sure they get a good nights sleep Sunday night.

Son came home and said he must have a nutricious breakfast next week,I think he's expecting full english everyday next week.

My second choice secondary school did set by SATS results, but thankfully the school he got into do CATs in July.
