I'm worried about my DC GCSE'S

They will do no revision, they seem to think that they will breeze past it and get amazing levels, they are bright but they don't revise. They are in year 10 and from what I've heard the others are miles ahead in revision and revision techniques preparing for year 12 but he is so nonchalant about it... should I be enforcing more work upon them or should I let them figure it out themselves??

Draylon - the story about your DS sound sounds EXACTLY like ds Shock. Now in L6 and wanting to study what your DS is studying. Only question is where is your ds’s offer from pls ? You can PM me of you prefer.

My dd had a slightly laissez faire attitude towards revision for GCSEs, she did re idiot a few months before the actual exams but by her own admission she really could have tried harder and wished I'd nagged her more. She did get 10 A/As but she's well aware that if she'd actually re used more they would have all been As.

She's about to sit her A levels now and I've definitely been far more naggy because although she's got an unconditional place as her insurance choice at uni, I don't want her thinking it's all fine because she's going. So I'll continue to nag her until June.

EnconaHotSauce · 02/04/2018 19:35

Sluttybutty, I may be wrong but I thought an unconditional offer was only valid if it was taken up as your firm offer, ie can’t be your insurance offer. I’ve not been through university entry with dc yet but from reading on MN that was my understanding

SluttyButty · 02/04/2018 20:25

Encona no not from Leicester for her. They've said they're happy to be her insurance choice. I didn't agree with her naming this one because she also had a reduced offer from Exeter with a cash incentive. But what the hell do I know, we're just paying for it 🙄

Draylon No we are paying for some of it. She won't get a full maintenance loan, only a partial one so we have to pay the rest.

YokoHama · 03/04/2018 15:41

She did get 10 A/As but she's well aware that if she'd actually re used more they would have all been As.

Slutty - Yes, because these are exactly the kind of terrible results OP and everyone else here is worried about if their dc don't revise Hmm.
What exactly is the point of this post?

Passportto · 03/04/2018 15:49

DS1 did his GCSEs last year and I was exactly the same. I'm afraid to say things only improved when I gave up and decided I could do no more. Then he seemed to start applying himself and in the end did reasonably well. I still think he could have done better if he'd worked harder sooner, but he did work pretty hard from Easter onwards in year 11. I think in many ways my nagging was counterproductive.

BackforGood · 03/04/2018 16:32

I presumed you were going to say they were in Yr11, and in the last few weeks running up to them.

They are in year 10 and from what I've heard the others are miles ahead in revision and revision techniques

I don't know who you are listening to, but I don't know any dc who spend much time revising in Yr10. It's not in the nature of teens.

Yvest · 03/04/2018 16:37

I have a year 10, he does his homework - generally pretty well. He revises for tests - generally pretty well but there’s no way on this earth he revises for the sake of it. There’s too much fortnite to play and YouTube videos to watch. His friends are the same. I’m sure he will do well but I am happy with this as I don’t wa t him burnt out before next year

Devilishpyjamas · 03/04/2018 22:20

Ds2 is in year 11 at a grammar. Bright boy - didn’t revise for a single exam until mocks. Did the bare minimum to escape hassle at school. Honestly OP in year 10 I was pulling my hair out. As soon as September year 11 started he started to work. He’s set himself up a desk away from his computer and takes himself off there for 4 hours a day. I’m staggered.

He has applied for Extended diplomas in theatre practice (one BTEC one UAL - both like the computer one described above - 3 A level equivalent) and also A levels - I still think the extended diploma might suit him better, but I could now see him knuckling down to A levels if he chooses that route. In year 10 I was strongly advising him against A levels unless he increased his work hours (from zero to something).

So don’t despair yet.

4DDs · 04/04/2018 20:07

Don't we all wish our DCs would just knuckle down and study? I've only 1 DC left in school (out of 4) and she has her GCSEs coming up. Her mocks were not as good as she hoped...what worries me is that I teach a programme to kids about how to study and to deal with exam stress and anxiety. In her school! There's a saying about 'a profit is without honour in his/her own home'. Anyway she has just started to listen to me and is applying what I've been teaching her peers and others so hopefully she'll be ready in time. It's never really too late.

pointythings · 04/04/2018 20:18

DD2 is in yr 10. She revises for tests and does homework, but isn't already revising for GCSEs. A lot of her homework incorporates creating revision resources for herself, and she does it diligently. She also has a life.

DD1 sis GCSEs last year, used much the same approach - schools really ramp it up in yr11 and your DS will soon find out a lackadaisical attitude won't help him. If nothing else, his first lot of mocks will shock him into working.

CPtart · 04/04/2018 20:21

DS 2 is in year 10. He does his homework and revises for tests as they come up and has very good predicted levels, but revising for the sake of it just yet...no way! He's currently in the USA on a school trip, and I'm mor than happy for him to have fun for the next few months. From September onwards however, I'll be monitoring the Xbox useage closely!
