Hi. My DD is going to an independant school in september and has to have the correct uniform from the school shop! Am just trying to get an idea on how much it would cost please. I know the blazer is £60 and the coat is £60 too plus sports uniform, the list goes on.......

We have spent about 300 - 400 for each DS and DD, with the blazer and coat being the big costs. What a ripoff.

We spent over £500 kitting out our two first time round and at least half of their stuff (tunics, rugby shirt, blazers etc) was secondhand (worth checking if they operate an official second hand sale, ours contributes towards the Parents Association funds for the school)

that's crazy money for school uniforms

Hulababy · 07/05/2007 21:14

Costs a fortune!!! DD started PP1 this year so we have recently found out. Mya dvice is to use the school school for good quality second hand if you can. esp for blazers and coats if possible. DD's coat was £30 from school school instead of £80 in John Lewis - and it has only lasted a year, too small now.

Let's see:

Winter
Pinafore - £27 each
Shirts - get from anywhere so about £8 for 2 I guess
Cardigan - about £30 IIRR
Tie - about £5
Winter coat - £80 new
Hat - about 30 new

Summer
Dress - £33 each
Blazer - about £70
Boater - about £25

Then on top of that:
PE shirt - about £20
PE shorts - about £4
Ballet outfit and shoes - no idea as PILs bought them
Lunch apron - about £20
Waterproof mac - about £30
Leather satchel - paid £20 second hand

Is that it?

Think we get even more items to add to list next year with swimming and tennis!

LIZS · 07/05/2007 21:15

oh yes and don't forget the shoes - indoor trainers, outdoor trainers , soccer boots, proper shoes, ballet ....

SueW · 07/05/2007 21:15

Skirts around £20 each, shirts £7 each, cardi can't remember. Summer dresses £25 each.

We bought the first lot from the supplier and last year's summer dresses but everything else has been from the nearly new shop. Most people use this - partly because it's on site, open every Wed pm and partly because the supplier is in town and completely :@£Q@^:£

Hulababy · 07/05/2007 21:17

Oh and don't leave util the school holidays to buy. Second hand shop - go now for winter stuff as everyone just moving into summer around now. Get best stuff then. And then for new stuff go before school breakss up. John Lewis (our stockist) ran out of items by week 1 of the holidays last year!

My dd is going to a state grammar school and her uniform is going to cost about 350. No including -I kid you not -the embroidering of her full name in gold on the left ankle of her jazz trousers, the right breast of her pe shirt and on various other places on various other items at 3 pounds a pop! Not to mention the hockey stick, the tennis racket and the scientific calculator.....

yummymummy06 · 07/05/2007 21:41

God, £20 on a pe shirt! I can't believe schools can get away with this. I think everything has to come from the school shop. They do secondhand too but I thought they will think im tight if I buy secondhand but I agree they don't wear them long. So she starts in september, when Is the best time to go and get secondhand stuff?

For winter stuff I would recommend between now and just after half term. Summer uniform has just started here and becomes compulsary at half term, so lots of stuff going into shop now.

Enid · 07/05/2007 21:45
Hmm
yummymummy06 · 07/05/2007 21:45

I think the school said once we get all the paper work through I need to contact the lady to measure up for uniform! When she starts in september could I buy the winter uniform before she starts and pe kits etc, they wont make me buy summer stuff for the following year surely?

DDs summer dress £12 each

For winter skirt was about £20 new (but I got 1 2nd hand for £7)

T-shirts £10 each (but again got 2 2nd hand for £2 each)

Jumpers about £12 each

but I know the blazers are very expensive.

This is an indepdent school - seems unlike the fees the uniform is quite cheap(ish).

We also have also non-generic PE kit and a black coat.

Hulababy · 07/05/2007 21:49

No you won't have to get summer stuff yet.

However, do check what uniform they wear in September. DD's school they can wear winter or summer until october half term. Thinking we'd save cash DH and I only bought the winter uniform. First day at school and DD was one of only two children in her class in winter uniform. Needless to say I fell for it and went and bought summer uniform that day!

gingersj · 07/05/2007 21:54

I share uniform with a mum who has a boy aged 7 and daughter aged 4. Mine are DD aged 6 and DS aged 4. I give her all the old girls stuff, she gives me all the old boys stuff. I probably get the worst end of the deal, but it makes it much easier.

MrsDiorKeanuReeves · 07/05/2007 21:56

My ds has three pairs of M&S trousers at £4 each, two 'official' jumpers at £7.50 each and 8 polo tops from BHS @ £4 for two. His shoes cost £32 from Clarks approximately 4 times a year!

LIZS · 08/05/2007 07:55

You may find that they can go back in summer uniform in Septmeber , ours can until October half term and most do for several weeks at least. So it might be worth getting one dress, preferably 2nd hand in case it gets outgrown by the following summer. Really there is no stigma attached to it , ours is all quality controlled and less than a quarter of original price. We bought one set new and the back up set plus specific pieces such as sports shirts 2nd hand and saved a fortune. As it gets outgrown it gets fed back into the system and you can make much of the money back on 2nd hand stuff.
