Anybody knows what's going on in Mill Hill School with the new head? There are new teachers with little or no teaching experience.

Have nced

The new head is not particularly popular with staff, students or parents. She was brought in to fix the financial pickle that buying the Mount brought. As a result there have been cutbacks across all areas of the school including saving in staff costs by hiring inexperienced teachers.

Inexperienced teachers???!!!
This is unacceptable!!!!

New head not so new - two / three years? I like her a lot, very informed, emphasis on academic side of school, I think teaching is getting better in fact.

Thank you, dontbutme.
It’s good what you say.

The governors took the brave decision to remove the head. Hoping they now pay more attention to the academic side of the school. It's vital.

How do you think newly qualified teachers gain their experience? I have often found them to be fantastic because they are yet to be jaded by demanding parents!

EachPeachPearRum · 24/08/2018 23:38

Wasn't she only appointed a year ago? Mill Hill isn't really covering itself in glory.

Deadline99 · 25/08/2018 14:42

Difficult to understand why she was hired in the first place. Mill Hill needs an eloquent new head with strong and proven academic success in other independent schools. Mill Hill is a wonderful school with a lot of potential to become very competitive.

EachPeachPearRum · 25/08/2018 21:29

I'm not sure it will ever become very competitive or even if that's the direction it should try for really. It seems to be most parents fall back school for if UCS/Highgate/chanting/NLCS etc don't work out.

FanDabbyFloozy · 26/08/2018 11:18

@EachPeachPearRum - that might be the view if you live in Hampstead Grin

But if you like in OUTER North London and want co-ed, this school is your primary target. The schlep to Highgate is a bit much and Highgate doesn't have the coach routes other schools have.

Amaaboutthis · 26/08/2018 15:44

Mill hill has talked about becoming more academic since time began. I don’t think that will happen, there are plenty of academic schools doing a stellar job and mill hill sits very comfortably in the less academic camp of which there are few options but always needed. Having said that the good local state schools have GCSE and A level results at least as good and in many cases much better so I’m not sure what you’re getting for the best part of £25k a year. Therein lies the problem, many parents don’t want to pay for an outcome they can get for free hence mill hill can only be very moderately selective

Deadline99 · 26/08/2018 16:59

I agree. The reality is that, if Mill Hill doesn't improve the academic side (by hiring good teachers), there will be less and less parents applying for a place as there are state schools performing better.

A levels improving? In 2015 Mill Hill reported 45% of passes at top 2 grades A/A and 76% at A-B. But this year the passes were 39% at top 2 grades A/A and 72% at A/B. Mmm......

Local state schools had as high as 55% A- A and close to 90% A - B. What are you paying for?

Deadline99 · 17/09/2018 09:24

Good question, thank you.

Mill Hill has always been a not terribly academic school. It's the fallback for those that don't get into the more academic schools or those who don't want big class sizes in the younger years. The more able trickle off to other schools at 7/11/13. They fill numbers with those that move at inconvenient times and international students. I'm not really sure there is a will to change.

FanDabbyFloozy · 17/09/2018 21:16

@Amaaboutthis - which local schools? I know Mill Hill County got 42% A*-A and it is partially selective so tends to do better than other non-selective schools.
If you're counting the local grammars, then you are quite right but these are very selective indeed.
