I've often wondered why aren't there many men teachers for very young children?

YES. Currenly DS2 has one in Yr2. A very good thing he is too. Lots at DS1's junior school too. Infact DS1 has one now too, which is great. His first. He loves it - he's very straight forward and up and down, and gets on with teaching.

In dd and ds's school they have teachers who cover classes. They cover all classes and Ds has them in Nursery from time to time.

worleyhurley · 06/05/2007 10:12

My ds1 had a man last year in yr2. He was brilliant, far better than some of the others he's had. He really brought ds1 out of himself and helped him along, he even got him interested in sport, which he hated up till then.

cylonbabe · 06/05/2007 10:13

ds2 doesnt, but the other year one class does.
ds1 did in year four and five

cylonbabe · 06/05/2007 10:15

both my ds1's male teachers are useless, but that s not because they are male. they're just not good teachers to him. iyswim

charliecat · 06/05/2007 10:17

DD2 year 1 has just got a male teacher, only one in school.

fortyplus · 06/05/2007 10:46

In the 9 years that my 2 were going to the local primary only 2 male teachers were appointed. The first one turned out to be inept and was sacked after a term. The other was appointed 18 months ago & is still there teaching yr 6.

McDreamy · 06/05/2007 10:48

DD starts school in Septmeber. There are 3 FS2 classes and one of them has a male teacher. I'm sort of hoping she will get him but I don't know why!

pointydog · 06/05/2007 11:05

Don't think it's suspicion that keeps men from teaching.

Lowish pay for long hours, having to change everything to fit in with latest policies, faffing about dealing with young children.

Unlikely to change muchg

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 06/05/2007 11:13

My children all had a male teacher in Yr6 and a male head. Since they've left the teacher has moved on (probably to obtain a headship) and the head has retired. Both have been replaced by women. And at the school I work in the two male staff we had are now doing supply. We do have a male support assistant for a pupil who has SEN.

I think the main issue with male staff in primary is the lack of earning potential. In secondary there are more management points available as subject leaders etc. Career progression in primary is more limited.

Hulababy · 06/05/2007 11:16

DH doesn't have a male primary school teacher but, of the 7 class teachers int he school, one of them is male.

It's a shame there aren't more male primary school teachers. IME they make great teachers for younger children.

pointydog · 06/05/2007 11:19

A mix would be better, more healthy mainly from the staff/mnanagement point of view.

But it makes little difference, if any, to children's learning and it ain't going to happen.

tigi · 06/05/2007 11:27

ds had a male teacher in years 4 & 5, and he was just fab. He really made the children enthusaitic about learning, and he played a lot of cricket with them, which they thought was brilliant. He was a great role model for the boys. Sadly he left the area, so someone else has now has the good fortune of having him.

roisin · 06/05/2007 14:18

One of the things we liked about dss' primary was the number of male class teachers: 5 out of 14 when they started and the HT was female. (I don't like the model of a big primary with all female staff and a male head.)

Unfortunately one of the male staff has retired, and two have moved away from class teaching: 1 is PT music specialist, and the other is IT specialist. They have been replaced by women.

But at least the children all get to see good male role models.

Ds1 had a male teacher in yr1.
Ds2 had male teacher in yr2, and also in yr3 (current).

pickledpear · 06/05/2007 14:21

we have a reception class male teacher and at first he looked about 20yr but in fact he was 30yr the girls especially loved him to bits the first year he seemed to do wonders with the kids he now been here 4yrs and we have noticed he shouts alot and not like previous older lady teachers who mother the children through the realisation reception is for working and not playing

MrsWeasley · 06/05/2007 14:38

We have a yound male in our infacts (yr 1) he said to me that people think it odd that a young man wants to teach little ones! He is excellent with the kids(its his first teaching job) and all the children adore him, He has a very hard class too (lots of problems)

We had a male trainee teacher about 5 years ago and he was wildly respect by the class and parents alike. I would love my DS2 to have a male teacher.

My DS1 (year5) has a trainee teacher for a few weeks and his influence in the class is amazing. Some of the boys are quite aggressive towards him though. (hormones, maybe )

motherinferior · 06/05/2007 14:45

DD1's teacher is male. There's at least one other male teacher in her school, although the male head has just left.

Both teachers are rather attractive too, which I fear cheers me up frightfully when I'm sitting through class assemblies

MrsWeasley · 06/05/2007 14:47

oh our junior school (years 3-6) has a male head

kittypants · 06/05/2007 14:47

my favorite 2 primary teachers were male.

improvingslowly · 06/05/2007 14:59

yes and he is lovely. particularly good at keeping boys under control..

Gobbledigook · 06/05/2007 15:04

No, but there are 3 male teachers in the juniors.

MrsWho · 06/05/2007 18:12

Kids will get on at the juniors but not in infants

UnquietDad · 07/05/2007 22:15

Two out of the seven full-time teachers in DD's school are male, one being the deputy head. Both great as far as I can tell.

rbj949703 · 07/05/2007 22:48

We've got separate infants' and juniors, one in infants, none in juniors.

SoMuchToBits · 07/05/2007 23:03

At ds's primary school ( 2 classes per year) ther are 3 male teachers, plus the head who is male. The three teachers teach year 6, year 4 and year 2. I help out in the year 2 teacher's class and he is great.
