Figure skating & senior school

My dd figure skates and seems to have a flair for it. She also loves it. Just wondering if any UK senior schools in particular facilitate this. She is otherwise a good all rounder. Would love pointers from others with dc who’ve pursued this sport. Thank you!

I was involved in figure skating though not from a school point of view.

The high level young skaters I knew went to a mixture of state and private schools (most of the private school kids I know I met through skating as I live in an area of excellent state schools and not huge choice of private schools), i would say it’s most important to find a school that will be supportive of her doing tests and competitions as mostly these will be on school days and competitions especially may require travel and overnight stays. I knew one teenager who had PE scheduled for her first lesson several days a week but she was allowed to miss pe to train at the rink. I’m not sure whether the timetable or the skate instead of pe agreement came first.

And from a practical POV how easy is the journey between the rink and the school since most skaters I know train before and/or after school. This will often mean doing the journey in rush hour traffic.

What level skater is your daughter? Talk to the other parents at the rink, especially of skaters that are very serious, especially those who are better than your dd

my daughter fs in Canada. i might not be of much help but glum has covered most of the common points. before and after school ice times and off ice training (dance weights and aerobics). in Canada if you coordinate with the school in some districts it can counts towards PE credits. and yes permission to miss a fair amount of class time.

Thank you. My dad is only 10 at the moment so has another few years before moving to senior school, but we have started looking at schools. My immediate thoughts are that it would be easier to keep her local and therefore be able to ferry her to and from the rink. Proximity to an ice rink is obviously important. She has only been skating for 2 months but loves it and now has a coach who seemed surprised that she already had a toe loop three weeks in. So, we shall see.

So is she in a Prep at the moment and moving at 13?

Agree with PP, the best you can hope for is flexibility to miss school for training and competitions. I don't think there are any uk schools with skating as part of their extra-curricular offering.

It's early days to be picking a school based on skating though.

I totally agree Lowdoor! But, just doing my research. Yes, she’s at prep now.
