How much do you get involved in school curriculum 'topics' at home?

So, e.g. if your 5 year-old was currently doing a topic all about insects/ small creatures at school, would you....

a) -chat a bit about it together and point our a few spiders and wood lice in the garden

b) - go through all his books for ones related to e.g. caterpillars/ ladybirds/ bugs and read them all reigiously all week

  • go round the garden 'bug-collecting' together
  • make playdough bugs together
  • print off bug colouring pictures and discuss and label them together

c) say "what topic was it again?" a week after it had finished...

Mine never tell me either. Occasionally ds will find one of dd's books with something relevant in (animals last term) eg a polar bear and take it into school but that is it. I took dd to a museum at EAster becasue she enjoyed it, not because it linked with the homes topic.

So definatley a resounding 'c' for me - love the 'independent learners' line

We get an A4 summary at the beginning of each half-term of key topics being covered.

I find it helps me to remind me to 'watch' for clues if DS seems interested in something, so

e.g. "Mummy, look - there's a spider"

instead of
"Ok, hang on, I'll kill it..."
becomes
"oh yes - let's catch it humanely with a homemade pooter and examine it under the magnifying glass, darling..."

Mine usually want to continue topic work at home with great enthusiasm - get books out to read, draw pictures, do experiments, etc. My input tends to be limited to "hmmm..." "really?" and "yes dear" at appropriate intervals!
