Independent or comprehensive college?

My DD currently studies at an independent school which she can continue her A level there. There is an excellent comprehensive college near us as well. She will need to make a decision about which college to attend for her A level. Would anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks.

I found my calculus book. Life is good :).
Had a long chat with head of math at the Indie school.
He said it was refreshing to chat with a parent who felt comfortable with further math & didn't say "I don't know where they get their talent for math from" about own DC.

I won't tell DH that.... will reinforce his prejudice that fee-paying schools are only suitable for the dim children of dim but rich parents.

But I do consider it wrong and offensive that everytime tutoring is mentioned on MN it is tageted at Asians/Koreans. It is a general theme and not a criticism directed at you. I have no idea why you thought it necessary to mention that one of your DS's friends being tutored was Korean and if I am being boring and lazy to pick up on it I apologise. My opinion is unchanged and I still think it is wrong but I can accept that you disagree, we are allowed to have different opinions.

I thought it was worth pointing out that the exception that proved the rule was a boy from Seoul. You asserted that tutoring was pretty universal in British private sixth forms. I really don't think it is. Plenty of DSs friends, including his best friend, were of Asian ethnicity. They were not tutored.

I have no view on whether the ethnicity of British students determines how likely they are to be tutored in sixth form. Mainly because I really don't think many are. Actually in my experience tutoring is as often an American or Russian thing, because of the emphasis put on 'class placement' when it comes to college applications. But presumably this too will raise some MN hackles.
