dd is in yr 5 in the uk and had started to do multiplication, but didn't get it. now she is in oz for a year she has gone into a class which can do this sort of calculation very easily but she can't.
As a teacher I should be up to date with the new methods of teaching this but I am tired and out of synch so rather than ploughing through all the websites to find an easy explanation , PLEASE can a proper mn teacher explain what she should have learned in the UK so that I can help her. i know that my method of long multiplication is very out of favour.

I am an early years teacher and not very confident with junior maths

Personally I would talk to the teacher and see if you can get hold of some of the materials that the children in her class would have used when they were first taught. There isn't one set way, expeically if you're in Oz (and therefore not covering UK Nat Cur). The teacher should be able to explian it to you in 5 minutes.

princesscc · 30/04/2007 11:22

I think they have to do 67 x 400, then 67 x 50, then 67 x 2 and add it all up. I seem to remember this way with my dd when she was in yr 5. I remember thinking how long winded it was! Maybe someone else will come along in a minute who has a better idea. You might have to wait til after school for the teachers though!

DebitheScot · 30/04/2007 11:24

I would do it as 452 x 67 and do it like this: (Don't know if there's an easier way but this is how I was taught it)

Write it as 452
x 67

(hope that lines up right)

Then do 452 x 7 and write that below the line
Then under that write a zero on the right hand side of the line and then do 452 x 6 and write that before the zero (ie you're really doing x60)

Then add the 2 lines together

452
x 67
3164
27120
30284

DebitheScot · 30/04/2007 11:25

something went wrong with my underlining and it didn't quite line up properly.

princesscc · 30/04/2007 11:26

That is the easiest way DS, but that is exactly the way they are not taught! God knows why. I think its because they have to learn lots of different ways of doing it.

robinpud · 30/04/2007 11:32

Thanks so much everybody.. keep it coming!

Talking to the teacher would be easy but dd is very reluctant and I am already percieved as over fussy English mother. (Ha!!! They have no idea about uk mums)
I really want someone to explain the Uk way- we need to keep this bumped until tonight. I keep forgetting about the time difference

Ds1 is in year 5 so is doing this at the moment. This is the (crazy) method: 452 X67

14 (2X7)
350 (50X7)
2800 (400X7)
120 (2X60)
3000 (50X60)
24000 (400X60)

30284

Nightmare!!!

ipanemagirl · 30/04/2007 11:39

robinp have you checked out the BBC maths website? That looks pretty good to me.

shergar · 30/04/2007 11:52

I would personally do it as

10 X 452 = 4520
6 X 4520 = 27120

to get 60 X 452,

then 7 X 452 = 3164

then add them together

3164 + 27120 = 30284

but I have not yet seen a child through school and have no idea about maths teaching these days.

Hermit · 30/04/2007 14:48

My ds would it do it by ElenyaTuesday's so-called crazy method. Actually, I don't think it's crazy - most of the children understand why they're doing it (in his class they were taught it in a very practical way - pretending to be tens and hundreds etc).
Once they are really secure in this method - and more importantly the reasons behind it, they learn other (older) methods.

popsycal · 30/04/2007 14:49

grid mmethod
will link

popsycal · 30/04/2007 14:51

click on number 15 in that list

by far the easiest way to do it and is set ot nice and logically - that is the way that most of my year 5 class are happy with

Hathor · 30/04/2007 14:52

I would do it like DebitheScot. We must be the same age.
Actually I would really do it on the calculator. Can't do mental maths!

ElenyaTuesday · 30/04/2007 15:14

Hermit, my ds1 doesn't think the method is crazy either - it's just that I find it more difficult and long-winded!!!!

popsycal · 30/04/2007 19:59

look at my link folks....

robinpud · 30/04/2007 23:21

Popyscal- exaclty what I wanted- thank you and thanks to all those who kept it bumped whilst we were sleeping. I had forgotten how good that website is, despite being the "competition" whilst at home it's far better than our LEA.

OP posts:
popsycal · 01/05/2007 08:04

it is the best website - I send similar versions home with homework if there is a chance that parents, obviously well-intentioned, teach the kids the way that they were taught which to us is 'easier'!!!

It is all about underwstanding the method and that is what all of what we may thinkn convulted methods are about

popsycal · 01/05/2007 08:05

also give me a shout if you want to know anything else - currently teaching year 5 but have taught year 6 for years previously
hth

robinpud · 01/05/2007 11:45

Thanks Popyscal- she did some with the grid and got them right straight away and remembered that was how they did them at home. She also plucked up the courage to ask the teacher to go through one with her tomorrow, ( after much encouragement and arm twisting!)
I am finding the different approach in the Australian system very interesting as a parent...
