How common is it for kids to have a tutor?

Title says it all really..

DD (12) is not too bad at maths but struggling a bit. Not the end of the world, but she really doesn't want to drop down a set at school so she's worried.

I suggested to DH that maybe we could get a tutor to give her a wee boost, and help with confidence. He thought that was crazy and there was no need. But I then talked to friends and it seemed like EVERYBODY had a tutor for their kids.

So is it really common? Or is it just a pushy parent thing?
Thanks!

I wouldn't hesitate. How is it pushy to support your dc learning?

I'm having to get tutors for mine and looking back I wish my dp had got me maths tutors.
If you can afford it and need it, don't hesitate!

Sounds like your DD is the one saying that she'd like some help. Absolutely get a tutor for her!

I had an English tutor when I was at school 30 years ago. I was a straight-A student, but more STEM oriented. I had a fairly crap English teacher, and didn't have the maturity to know how to learn independently in a subject that didn't come naturally to me - and I failed the Mock exam. My DF resisted even suggesting a tutor to me because he thought it would make me feel bad but my DM insisted that they offer it to me - and I jumped at the chance! Like your DD, I knew that I wasn't achieving what I wanted to but I didn't know how to fix it. The tutoring got me from failing to an A - I just needed that extra help to 'learn how to learn' in a subject I wasn't so naturally strong at. I'm still grateful to my DM for pushing for it!

I did work really hard for that A - I just wouldn't have known how to without the tutoring.
