Latymer Grammar School

RKNK · 03/01/2018 23:02

Hi we are seriously considering Latymer Grammar school for our child but I am a bit concerned about the travel to the school and reports of safety issues for kids travelling alone- but all dating back to 2009- no recent reviews.

It will be really very helpful if someone can share first hand experiences about the school, environment at the school (is it too academic), focus on sports and travelling to and from school alone.

Thanks

Its is stab city which is enough to put me off.

What a stupid comment Crouchendmumoftwo.

RKNK it's a great school - really good.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 04/01/2018 12:18

RythmStix - it really isn't if you look at the news in that area. I wouldn't send a teenage boy into that area in that uniform Im afraid.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 04/01/2018 12:28

Just to add Enfield has a serious issue of gangs and youth violence. It has a high number of stabbings in the area and gangs. If you dig deeper you can read about it with comments such as:

This week there was another stabbing very close to the school and last year a number of latymer pupils were mugged locally

Whether or not it is a good school I would not want my son going in to that area in a uniform - I would think he would be very vulnerable.

It's a very well regarded school. Families fight for a place there. I've never heard any one opine about knife crime worries around the school before.

RhythmStix · 04/01/2018 15:54

I don't need to 'dig deeper' Crouchendmum - I know the school extremely well, thanks. Grin

Yes there are rough elements on the N9 area but there are 6 forms of entry joining the school every year nearly all of whom have a great time. Please do stop with the silly hyperbole.

RhythmStix · 04/01/2018 15:55

Maybe you are bitter because your dc didn't get in? Wink.

Don't have much personal experience of the school but DS was offered a place there in 2003 and we rejected it due to other priorities. I liked the school when we visited and we never heard of any knife crimes at the time. True, there was a period some years ago when the area – not the school – was notorious for street crimes but the thugs have by now all grown up and gone away. My niece was a Head Girl there in the 1990’s and today she is a very successful GP. Her younger brother was also a student there and likewise today he’s a very successful dentist. Just goes to prove the school can produce successful medics, if you’re that way inclined. I’d say, go for it if you like the school assuming your child can get a place there. It’s very competitive as is the case with all London grammars!

thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2018 18:34

It's very good and, unlike most of the London grammars, it's mixed sex.

Of the children I knew who attended, none complained about crime, etc. and seemed very happy with the whole experience.

chronofix · 06/01/2018 11:05

It's a lovely and successful school. Whether you are worried about Edmonton as an area may depend on your own experience- crime is no worse than where we live so I and my child are not more concerned than we are on home turf. It also helps that kids can wear own coats and blazers are optional. That said, it can be a long journey on dark winter days and I urge you to do the trip back and forth yourself at 7:30 am and 4 pm at this time of year and see how you like it.

Scabetty · 06/01/2018 11:08

My nephew is year 11 and travels from Crouch End. Never had a priblem on public transport and is doing very well.

PinkSquash · 06/01/2018 11:08

If you're local to Latymer anyway, then the alleged issues will be the same at any school in the area, it's not just specific to that school.

I went to another school locally and lots of children travelled from miles around to go there, they're never normally alone

chronofix · 06/01/2018 12:36

You also asked if it was too academic. As a 'superselective' grammar it will be, but there is a nice relaxed feel to it and lots of extra curricular stuff especially music.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 07/01/2018 00:06

Rythmstix - my kids are too young and are at primary. But it's something I've discussed with my husband as he went to a top grammar school in a rough area and he is more against my son travelling into to disadvantaged areas wearing a uniform that picks him out at a selective school than me. It is based largely around that. Sorry if it has irked you but is is a view other people I know have and some I know have kids there and are happy. I also know a group of kids who travel there together for this reason and who dont travel alone. I would take this in to consideration as have other parents I know who send their kids there and who dont, it is an issue lots of parents I know have discussed. It's just another opinion and knowledge is power.

DS went to Latymer and I can't recommend it highly enough. Great school and very supportive too, not all highly academic schools are like that.
The area is not nice but he never had a problem.

botwotworks · 20/03/2018 17:21

Hi
Latymer has a high proportion of boys compared to girls. Can anyone give me info on the experience for girls ?

I'm concerned my DD will get distracted by boys & dumb herself down (like her mum!)
