Phonics stuff for 2yo

cornflakegirl · 22/04/2007 16:10

My ds is nearly two, and has been showing an interest in letters for a while. So far we've been teaching him letter names (when he asks!), but we thought it might be better to do phonics instead.

Dh used to be a primary teacher, so knows the Jolly Phonics stuff, although I don't. So if we're going to use it, we could do with some material so I can learn the actions and stuff. We were also wondering if there are any good books or other materials that would be suitable for a 2yo?

You can buy Jolly Phoincs stuff at ELC and most book shops. They also have it on Amazon and Play I think.

You need to go to this website to learnt he actions:
www.jollylearning.co.uk/

I taught my 2 yo these very quickly (now 3 yo). Just simple repetition over 3 weeks and a bit of ongoing reinforcement thereafter.

Have fun! BTW, if you buy the frieze you can use these as stimulus - my dd2 loves the pictures. Vids are good too.

Springadora - thanks for the link - will check it out. I thought the frieze looked good - how big is it when it's all up?

The frieze is split into sections so you can either have it all around the room or as posters. Need quite a i bit of wall space. I use mine as large flash cards. Anyway, have fun and um, try to avoid teaching the alphabet at this stage as it confuses things.

I'm making a scrapbook with dd (loose pages) going through the letters in JP order. DD3 is child no. 4 and I'm determined she'll read OK before school (I'm a teacher with 1 dyslexic child so need to know how she does before the system swallows her up).

cornflakegirl · 24/04/2007 12:39

ah, i was wondering if it would work as flash cards! thanks for the tip.

will henceforth renounce all letter names!

swedishmum - i like the idea of a scrapbook - thanks! ds really likes books, so i think that would work well for him

dd adored leapfrog fridge phonics still does and she has been an early reader.
Also leapfrogs phonics radio (parents idea of hell but dd adored hers)

Hi, we too have the leapfrog fridge phonics and think it is really great. My daughter can sing the alphabet song all the way through just from listening to the fridge phonics. we have recently bought the extension pack too (£7 ish)so we can make up words on the fridge too. well worth the money although it does also drive me up the wall!

A say A, A says aa, every letter makes a sound, A says A and aa!!!!!!! (the annoying song!!)

Piffle · 24/04/2007 14:07

oooh extnsion pack
will go buy now]
we are blu tacking letters on for her atm!

swedishmum · 24/04/2007 23:23

I've also been laminating letters for her to go over. She loves it. She's 3 btw.
