School trip by tube amidst terror

Hi all. So my dd who is 7yrs has a school trip. The class is to take the tube and visit a central London museum. I cannot sleep and feel so anxious about her travelling by tube. I know we shouldn't "give in" but that's a child. I also checked the govt website which says at current the threat level is "critical". I would feel bad for having her miss out but bad for sending her knowing the threat level. Please all mums out there... please can someone give me some honest advice.

There was a school class on that flight brought down on purpose by the Germanwings co-pilot, coming home from a Spanish exchange.

It's senseless, it's terrible, and I can't imagine the grief.

But we (a lot of us, anyway) still fly, and when the time comes I will no doubt send my dc on exchanges.

I know the anxiety. I've felt it myself (live near a capital city - not London). But we can never foresee and avoid every risk (see above), and we will deprive ourselves of life in a different way if we try. Sensible risk assessment - yes, absolutely. Avoidance of all activities - a road we can't go down.

I live in London and my 11 year old recently did a school trip to central London on a coach - they were given a talk about what to do 'if something happens'. I didnt really worry as the chances of something happening where he was going at at that time on that day are pretty minuscule!

I do worry about younger ones doing school trips to central London on public transport though! Not because of terrorism but more likely dangers when you take a big group of kids on public transport in a big city. I'm wondering why your DC is going by tube - my two have always done central London trips by coach or bus?

I too was travelling up and down to London during the IRA campaigns. Never thought of not going.

My mother lived and worked in London during the V-bombing raids in 1944 and 1945. Before that she lived in a coastal town where they had dive bombing raids in daylight.

People just got on with things.

Honestly Onlyme and Argeles I think you both need help for general anxiety disorder if you both live in London and are too paralysed with fear to use the tube! I can understand someone from out of town feeling like this as it's all alien to them but when you live and work in London???

You must be very careful about passing your out of control fears on to your children as it will do them no favours.

Genuinely baffled.

OP didn't say she couldn't use the tube herself. Just that she was worried about sending her 7 year old off on a school trip on one. Not the same at all.

Anyone who can't see the risk in a school trip on the tube has no imagination frankly. Obviously that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

plantsitter · 02/10/2017 22:57

Also HarrietVane99 yes people got on with it. But they evacuated children. Plus 'getting on with it' doesn't necessarily mean 'never wondering if you might be blown up.'

Anyone who can't see the risk in a child travelling by car frankly has no imagination. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

Just wanted to say a big thankyou to the good sensible advice. I did send dd on the trip in the end as I did not want her to miss out nor instill my anxiety in her. Yes I was uneasy and yes I do have anxiety. I was supposed to be on the tube the day that July the 11th happened (except I was ill) so guess it stems from that. I can see how the media does focus a lot on these attacks even though there may be a trillion incidences that happen each day that go unreported. Finally I believe that everything is meant to be ( that's my personal belief. ..so don't judge me). Thanks once again xx
