Pupil premium-HELP!

HoldOnHoldOn · 31/08/2017 12:04

My DS is about to enter Year 6 so we will need to apply for higher schools v soon. Our closest high school is in special measures. I'd really like him to go to a great school about 5 miles but competition for places is unbelievable and we don't stand a chance realistically. However, he is a pupil premium child and I was wondering if this was taken into account in any way when allocating high school places? If not then I need to consider more realistic options closer to where we live. Thanks

It'll be taken into account if the entrance criteria say so (it's something that can be given priority, but not something which must be done).

Ooh so it something that will be stated somewhere e.g. On school website? I will investigate... thank you

The school will have a priority criteria which is easy to check online under their admissions criteria.
I think it depends for what reason your dc receives pupil premium e.g. are they looked after or children of parents in military forces, both of which are usually prioritised.

However I think if a child received pupil premium simply because they receive free school meals doesn't push them any higher up the list. ( I'm not saying you come under that criteria, it's just an example.)
Hope the above makes sense.

I think it would be rare if there were no health issues or some of the other criteria that have been mentioned. Children in care etc do have priority.

It also makes sense to look at all the option anyway.
Put the one you really want as your first choice, and then make sure you use all the choices available to you, including one you will definitely get in to.
I would also say it makes sense to investigate all your options anyway, as sometimes a school is a lot better than 'it's reputation' and sometimes a school might have a good 'reputation', but it might not suit your particular dc.
