Hi,

We are returning to the UK and will be moving to Leigh-on-sea.Our state school catchment will be Westleigh School but I am also interested in hearing recommendations from parents whose children attend the local independent schools( St Michaels,Thorpe Hall and Alleyn Court). We have two boys aged 2 and 6 months.

I am interested in the level of pastoral care, results at 11+,how effectively bullying is tackled etc.Do the bright children and those who need a little more support reach their potential?

Also do any of the local independent schools have any history of success at the top boys boarding schools, such at Eton,Winchester or Westminster as this is a route we may take if our boys turn out be very able academically.I do realise they would have to be exceptional before we can consider this path.

Hi OP I can't comment on the schools you mention but if you wish your child to move onto a boarding option at 13+ you need to send your child to a local indie prep school which finishes at 11 and supports your educational ambition for your children. My daughter recently sat 11+ entry for two very well known boarding schools and without a doubt talking to other parents, prep schools which finish at 11 were much more accommodating at time off for tests/interviews etc plus they are not competing to keep your child. I'd also become familiar with boys feeder prep options 11-13 - as you might need to get your name down early for those also.

I am assuming you need boarding to support family moves for work? We only looked at boarding as my DD was leading the discussion. At the trial sleepovers she was very happy staying. But some girls were not. Do consider that if your choices are driven by your/your DH ambition for your kids to attend a 'named' boarding school and decide nearer the time if they have the right personality. Full boarding (which includes the ones you name) mean not seeing your child for 3 weeks at a time when they are still young. In the end my DD chose a London day school but we might consider boarding for y9 entry or if our work circumstances changes and we move abroad.

I do live near Leigh and before you exclude other options do consider Westcliff boys grammar which is excellent (check out the Sunday time parent power) and west Leigh is an outstanding primary school.

HTH! Good luck!
