Hi, new to this forum, wanting any help on comprehensive schools in Cornwall. I'm relocating with my twelve year old son and also 19 year old son who is joining the Navy but over the next twelve months wanting to get extra qualification in engineering to go into navy at higher ranking.... I'm open to whereabouts in Cornwall we move to but I do love the looe area. Obviously huge difference in holidaying and living there.
Anyone experienced a relocation to Cornwall and any pointers re school and college would be appreciated thank you Smile

For your school age child, you need to know that most comprehensives in Cornwall are only just acceptable for the very average. If your DS is clever, you need to hope and pray that Devonport High School for Boys has a place. You don't say where you will live, but may I suggest you look closer to Plymouth. Cornish roads are slow.

At the moment in SE Cornwall, Launceston is probably the best school. Callington is very ordinary and give Torpoint a wide berth (swerve this at all costs). I think Saltash is okay.

For your older son, Plymouth City College at Goschen is the starting point. From Looe, not impossible but not easy; distances are deceptive around helre because the roads are slow and the public transport not great.

Cornish schools are truly comprehensive, as there is no 11+ or super selective nonsense to deal with. It also means that you get a great mix of kids from different backgrounds from the emmets who have relocated from up country, wealthy locals to council estate kids. Most schools have a good range of sets of covering the different abilities and people tend to go to their local school as a 20 mile trip is likely to take a good 30-40 minutes on a good day if you have to drive, but locals get bussed in.

We probably have just as many people going to naice universities and getting good exam results as many other parts of the country. If you like Looe, find a home in Looe. If you love where you live & have a great home life, the rest will follow.

Duchy college near Callington is excellent and does armed service based courses
