What level of maths should an 8 year old have?

A friend's son is 8, and I'm a little concerned by his difficulties with maths. It seems to me he's struggling with fairly basic concepts around the number line. We're not in the UK, he's swapped school systems a couple of times, and I'm wondering if something's got lost along the way, or if he has dyscalculia. Any guidance as to what general level of maths he ought to have by British standards would be much appreciated!

This is the list of maths skills for yr3 (7/8 years old), and yr4 (8/9 years old.)

You could also look at the Y3 attainment targets in the National Curriculum.

If you want to make a gentle suggestion I totally recommend Prodigy- it's an online maths learning platform. It's adaptive so it introduces and builds skills automatically. Both my DS and my class are hooked, it's a really appealing format for a lot of kids (like Pokémon + maths).

Sorry Y4 attainment targets for an 8yo!

Thank you - that's hugely valuable. His parents will be delighted by the pointer towards Prodigy as they were planning to do some daily maths over the summer holidays. There's talk of him staying down a year but they'd rather avoid that if extra work now can help. Smile
