Teachers: what is the policy re time off for interviews?

Hell Dear Teachers, I have come across a teacher (on an expat site based in Europe), who claims that as a teacher in the UK, he was entitled to paid time off to attend interviews. I would love to hear anyone else's experience or knowledge of the ways of working for teachers, both permanent members of staff and contract/supply staff.

Hope this doesn't count as a TAAT, given that I read in on an entirely different board.

I don't think there is an official ruling, but for schools to be able to interview they also operate on the principle of letting people go to interviews too, and don't deduct from their wages. I've only ever come across a person being refused to go to an interview once, and that was in a private school with a difficult head. The union got involved.

Unlike other occupations, teachers can't take a day off work as holiday if they want to attend an interview. Nor can schools interview during the holidays ( not for teaching posts as the vast majority of interviews need children to practise on!). so, as trinity says, most teachers would be allowed paid leave for an interview.

Ah, that's very useful to know, thank you both very much.

There's no legal or statutory right. It used to be standard for the reasons above, but I know of plenty of heads (mostly academies) that are now refusing.

There isn't a universal right to paid leave to attend an interview. It's very much depends on local, agreements and heads discretion

Oohh, thank you very much for the confirmation rebel and the link mrz.
