I'm sure somebody will come on to tell you soon. But I just wonder why it matters - just let him enjoy reading and try not to worry what level he's at.

If you google the book bands and a guide will come up so you can see the full chart

There is a huge variation in reception and the children at the older end of the year will be almost a whole year older than your DS which makes a big difference at this age.
As long as he is enjoying learning to read and making progress I think that is all the teachers like to see for the younger reception children.
If they use the ORT then there's a guide on their website which tells you roughly where children should be at which age.

As long as he's enjoying it that's the main thing. Many "get " reading at different ages and by 8 (my eldest age) you can't really tell who "got" reading a lot later /earlier.

If you look at a chart blue is about the beginning of year 1 so if you're strict about it a few months ahead but children don't follow linear progress and for reading there be many on lower books and many on higher books!!

I listen to kids read who are 6 to 8, and lots are on blue. Obviously I get to hear the ones who are struggling, but it points to blue being good for an august birthday reception child.
I know what you mean about teachers holding back, I knew my ( august birthday) dd s doing well, but it wasnt till I met a student teacher from out school at a toddler group , and she said things like " your dd is utterly flying ".
I guess it's not professional for teachers to say it though.

Hi..thanks for replies. I know it doesnt matter as long as he enjoys it .. i guess because hes an august baby and his writing isnt great i always worry that hes doing ok!
