Not starting school till Y2

I don't know if this is just me or is it very unfair on the child.
A child has just started at dd school in dd class which is a mix 10 Y1 (the older Y1's)and 20 Y2. She appears to have had no education she appears to be about the same the level education wise as if she was starting reception. I was helping in the school and the children where doing hand writing. I have to say I felt very sorry for this little girl tring to keep up with the rest of the class as a not writter. The teacher was very good and was trying her best to help her form here letters.
What surpried me most is that it I had kept my dd out of school I would have tried to teach her some basics if she was to go straight in Y2. How easy is it going to be for that child to catch up and the stress for the child trying to catch.
I'm just feel very sorry for the child.

I thought yr 1 was compulsory. I think it's very sad to hold a child back like that. But, maybe she'll catch up by the end of the year if the teacher is good.

Some things will come on quickly (esp writing as she has more physical control due to age) some countries and types of school (Steiner) don't even start reading and writing till this age.
Just as well she is in a mixed class. She would be much more stressed in reception with the "babies"

You can home-educate a child. How much can a teacher do when you have 30 other children in the class. I forgot to say when I was in the class it had been split so their was only 15 in the class mostly Y1's. Most of the time it is 31 altogether. To many at the best of times if you ask me.

School itself is not compulsory Eleusis.

At least someone realised that home education for this child was a disaster.

I am sure that with someone to one help the little girl will catch up. We have no idea what kind of activites her mum had her doing at home. She might be ahead in other areas. Seven years old is still very little. My guess is that the school will put her on to school action or even school action plus to help her catch up.

It is not that unusual for a school to get children who can't read and write in English at seven years old. Sometimes refugee children can't speak English or write because they had no opportunity to attend school due to perscution.

Prehaps what it shows is that the progress of home educated children need to be monitored. (Whether the parents like it or not!) Prehaps what is sad is that this little girl was put in school sooner.

there are many other reasons she might not have started school before year 2 including home ed gone wrong and I would be very careful not to judge the parents for keeping her out. Things that spring to mind are illness and possibly she's no longer with her birth family

Just a couple of thoughts

My thoughts exactly twigg, she may be a girl who is fostered or adopted or she may have been long term ill. I wouldn't assume that this child has been home educated...may just have been neglected ayt home and ended up in care or something....difficult to judge properly when you just see the child in the class without knowing her background.....

Wasn't tying to dish the parents. Don't think she is foster/adopted as I have seen her at the school before when with older sibling.
Was really feeling for the child as I felt it is not an easy situation to be in. But thanks for the enlightment on some of the reasons she may have only just started school.
