CAT testing and progress Y5

My son is in Y5 in a prep school. He was assessed in Sep using the CAT and he scored just below 100 on each of the tests.
He took the PT in English and Maths recently and most of his results were below national average.
Yet, the headteacher told me that given his CAT results in September he progresses just as expected.
Was his reply reasonable? I personally feel that not only that he tried to wash his hands for not providing any support but I also think that he was academically incorrect. Abilities are innate but between the age 7-11 they can be improved through training. The school should have used the CAT scores in order to improve DS results. I just feel that the school did not do enough this year for my son although they know we were planning to take 11 plus exams. AIBU?

Yep, agree with shouldwestay. Computer screen testing can make a huge difference (negatively) to children with some forms of visual processing disorder. This isn't necessarily the case for the OP's child but no-one will know unless he is tested.

It was when my DS's school told me that maybe he was just average that I knew that I had to get him seen by an Ed Psych. And he isn't "average" - he's almost off the scale above average in abilities but hampered by being very, very significantly below average in one area of functioning. With accommodations he is not quite reaching his potential in class work yet but he is certainly working closer to it than when he was viewed as either a) bright but lazy or b) average.

Who knows in the OP's case.

The DS described here sounds like my son: age 12, in year 8. Any tips on senior schools for boys like this? Bright, but underperforming, possibly a late bloomer, average CAT score, "spikey profile" from EdPsyc. We are in Central London, but will consider reasonable travel.
