Question for MNers whose children are in Welsh-medium education ... about reading English

I know there are a few MNers out there whose children are in Welsh-medium schools - and I have a quandary, and want to pick your brains.

DS is 4, and in the meithrin on the local WM school - and very happy ... we are a bilingual family (dh = welsh-speaking, I'm learning) and have always read both Engish and Welsh books with dh.

Now, the thing is that ds is showing signs of being ready to learn to read - he knows all his letters, can write his name etc, but he won't be starting to learn to read Welsh until next year when he's in dosbarth derbyn, and he won't learn to read English until he's in KS2. I don't want to confuse him, but, by the same token, I don't want to hold him back - he asks questions about words, and we've started to spell out the simpler words he asks.

As I see it, I've got 3 options here:

  1. I leave the teaching of reading up to school, and just carry on reading English with him at home, but not actually teach him to read.
  1. I go full out and teach him to read in English.
  1. I carry on as I am at the moment.

3 isn't really an option, as ds is getting frustrated - what did you do?

Did any of you teach your child to read English before they did it at school? Did it confuse their learning of reading in Welsh?

If you id teach them to read in English, how did you do it? Did you use a readng scheme?

Sorry for all the questions - I have spoken to his teacher about him learning to read - but she just stressed that they just do reading readiness in the meithrin - as most of the children don't have any Welsh spoken at home, so need to learn to speak Welsh first before they jump right into reading and writing.

Sorry too if this is very confused - probably just shows how confused I am about the whole thing!

very difficult question becasue the two launguages are so different phonetically, and you don't want to confuse him.

My dh's cousin's children were in a simialr position - bilingula at home and at Welsh schools.

TBH I think I would add a fourth choice - teach him to read Welsh. If you teach him English phonics now he is unlikely to have got a true grasp of those before the school teaches him Welsh and he will be VERY confused. That is why they leave reading the second language til later when the first is firmly embedded.

So I would teach him Welsh phonics and reading, but you still read to him in English. Once he gets to school he will have a head start and should get reading in Welsh very quickly. Then you can introduce reading English in a couple of years rather than waiting til KS2.

HTH

Thanks Willowtree for the alternative option - do you have any idea of where I can get Welsh phonics materials from?

DS is odd when it comes to me speaking Welsh - he happily chats to dh in Welsh, but the minute I come into the room, he switches to English. I'm learning Welsh at the moment, so am trying out things on him, but I'm worried that my Welsh won't be up to teaching him to read. DH would do it, but the ideal time is when I pick him up from the childminder, as we have a spare time slot that we could use before we get into cooking tea mode.

Hi

I am sure I have seen it somewhere - will try and do some research and let you know.

You could always try posting on rrf.org.uk to see if anyone there can point you in the direction of some

Hi Willowtree - thanks for the pointer to rrf - I've registered, and hopefully somebody there will be able to point me in the right direction.

Meanwhile, I was reading Mister Magnolia to ds last night - and he started spelling out the word 'boot' - I was a very proud mammy, but also slightly worried, as he's asking the rules, but then applying them himself. I hope he doesn't end up horribly confused!

I have the opposite problem. I want to teach my children to read welsh and they are now doing phonics in an english school in england (we speak welsh fluently in england - my husband speaks english and I speak welsh to the children)... I have yet to find any phonics material in welsh and so would be grateful if anyone has any... I want to get onto this fast! I am currently just using sali mali and rala rwdins reading books! Any ideas would be great! Thanks
