[[Teacher recruitment a 'significant challenge', say MPs

No doubt a 'spokesperson for the government' will reply saying that teacher recruitment and retention is at an all time high though!

Apart from grammar schools, education hasn't been discussed much at this election, has it? Obviously everyone knows recruitment and retention is a problem and there are initiatives to try and address this. My LA has been very active in promoting recruitment packages for teachers. It could be argued that teach first is successful.

The problem is that people know the old perk of long holidays has gone and the money isn't great unless you get rapid promotion. The pensions are still very good when compared to other non government jobs but that doesn't mean much to a 21 year old. It is also a job for life - even with redundancies looming there are more than enough jobs to go round. The big problem is recruitment of high quality teachers. No school can afford weak teachers these days.

Wonder why that is then?????

It's not the recruitment that is the challenge, as much as the retention - as has been the case for many a long year. Everyone except successive Gvmnts seems to understand that.

Bojorojo, Whilst governmenrs keep throwing money at new ideas to get teachers FAST (troops to teachers, TAs to teaching, bursaries for maths/science grads) I don't think anything much has been done about teacher retention. There are loads of qualified teachers out there quitting on a yearly basis-they need to think about why that is?

It's not a job for life if it's unsustainable to remain. SLT also seem to take a dislike to experienced teachers in these fiscally difficult times and put them on capability or support plans if they get too experienced/vocal expensive. I would just like to say that the teachers who I have seen hounded our like this were not the weaker teachers, they were simply expensive.
